Is it possible to have strongholds in more than one house?
I already have the redoran stronghold.
In order to get the construction permit I had to kill the duke and take it off his body because he wouldn't give me more than one. I smoothed out everything with the house hlaalu and the gaurds. But ever since I gave the guy the papers he has said "construction will start any day now".
Well "any day now" was at least ten days ago!
Will this go on for ever? Or do I have to wait? (note that I already have one stronghold so I know that it takes SOME time!)

All strongholds are built at the same time–you do not require a second (or third) construction contract to have them created. If you haven’t yet, you will likely be send on a quest by House Redoran to kill the steward of the upstart Hlaalu noble who has the presumption to build a stronghold on the Odai Plateau. Equally embarrassing you will be sent by House Hlaalu to do the same to your counterpart (you) setting up shop at Bal Isra. There is a reason why the player is only intended to join one great house–the alternative makes no sense. There is also a reason that you have been able to join House Hlaalu (after first having joined House Redoran I expect)–it’s a bug. In aspiring to Hortator of House Hlaalu, Duke Dren becomes confused and thinks that you are a member of that house. In other words, a journal update makes available Hlaalu quests that otherwise would not (and were not intended to) be available. There are four that may always be available, but I suspect that is a bug also. The reason that you cannot join House Telvanni is that the bug favors only House Hlaalu. Had you joined House Telvanni first, you might now be offered Hlaalu quests but would be shut out of House Redoran.
You might try the mod that makes it possible to join all three great houses, but I seem to recall problems created as a result of it. I cannot say with certainty, but considering that the three houses were never intended to be played simultaneously I would not expect it to be otherwise.

Thanks, that explains it. :)
I've downloaded the Mod but I haven't installed it yet. In the download notes an the site it said that all the vanishing problems experienced before with this Mod have been fixed. I hope so.
Would installing it screw up the missions and other stuff that I've already done?

I do not know if the mod is compatible with saved games. Some mod authors specify that their mods must be used with new games only. Check the readme that was bundled with the download to see if this mod has any such restriction. If not, I expect that it would be fine. However, with any mod installation (and particularly one that may have known issues like this one) back up your recent saved game in-case the mod does cause problems for you.
