Have any of you been able to get System Shock to run in 1024x768 resolution smoothly? - by DentonSHODAN

I've been messing around with System Shock Portable and I just can't do it. The game actually looks VERY good in 1024x768 resolution, but it runs so choppy. Anyone have any suggestions?

Are you using DOSBox or NTVDM (the built-in DOS emulation in Windows)?
Because I can run SS1 at 1024x768 in the latter without much issue, though of course DOSBox needs a much more powerful CPU.

I was using DOSBox. Can you elaborate on NTVDM, though? How do I use it?

Try DGVESA mode or Mouse2kv mode. Those are both native modes that employ the NT-Virtual DOS Machine (NTVDM). The game needs a lot less CPU power that way.

I've tried those modes and I always get this error message:
"The system does not support fullscreen mode. Choose 'Close' to terminate the app."

What operating system are you using? NTVDM is not available in 64-bit versions of Windows.

Vista, 32-bit.

Meh, I don't feel like messing around with my video drivers, to be honest. Oh, well.
Anyone have any alternative solutions? I'm willing to play the game at a lower resolution, although I would like to optimize DOSBox the best I can. Any tweaks I should consider (like within DOSBox's conifg files or something)?

Heh...guess what? This worked for me on 7; I can now run SSP without DosBox and in the highest resolution.
Unfortunately, now my sound card isn't detected properly; I can get music but no sound effects even though I have VDMSound installed. In-game, SS1 says: Incorrect sound card for Digital FX.
