Happy Fourth of July, people of America!
The part I always want to focus on for occasions like this is that community means we take care of each other, and this holiday is about community. Don't let the cynics & nihilists distract or dissuade you. Nothing is stopping you from taking care of your neighbors & the vulnerable and being the change you want to see, and I recommend it. <3

Less of that watering (they say to water it with blood) thing and more of what dema said.
Lots of explodey things is cool though. Not in Cali though. Too dry.

<Insert birthday cake here>
I'm visiting my hometown of Tacoma, WA right now and it's a war zone out there tonight. It's a bit dry right now but I saw only one small grass fire tonight. We had lots of big aerial boomy things that were pretty epic this year.
Anyway, happy USA cake day!

Shower in the dark day, clean sparks diving down.

We camped this week, but broke camp on Thursday morning in time to return home and see our town's annual fireworks display. The display itself was unmemorable, a rapid intro followed by a slow cadence of rotating through the same charges over and over, a false finale @ 15 min, followed by a return to the slow rotating cadence and the real finale @ 25 min. It was a bit overly long considering the lack of imagination in the shot selection. But the weather was good, there was a good turnout, everybody was in a good mood, and the kids got a treat from the ice cream truck. My favorite part though was seeing the flag and its colors celebrated by everyone again instead of being abused as a political prop by the MAGA crowd.

I learned today that the reason we didn't seriously try to retake the United States was because we were convinced republicanism would fail and that the US would come crawling back anyway. Boy was that a bad prediction, but you can kind of see why it was a popular belief, since Britain's own republican experiment was brief and unsuccessful, culminating in the restoration of the monarchy scarcely a decade later.
By the time it became apparent that the USA was not returning to the fold voluntarily, Britain was somewhat more focused on conquering chunks of Africa and Asia, which, with the very greatest respect, were far more promising territories. And anyway, we could get what we wanted from America through trade rather than conquest.

The communist world realized this as well. The path to making things better is through trade and investment. That gave us a few decades of global friendly relations until thoughts turned conquest and control again.
