A little random Deus Ex trivia to celebrate the occasion:
* There was a lot of cross-pollination between the development teams of Deus Ex (ION Storm), System Shock 2 (Irrational Games), and Thief 1 & 2 (Looking Glass). Many of the team members of these companies came from the same core groups at Looking Glass and Origin. Early versions of the games were seen and commented on by people at all three companies, benefitting all the games. Doug Church (lead programmer of System Shock) was even a "Special Guest Programmer" on Deus Ex, helping out with AI and optimization while the team was in crunch mode.
* Very, very early in development, the DX team toyed with the idea of making Deus Ex an unofficial prequel to System Shock. The game would have ended on a space station, where JC Denton would merge with an AI on the station to become, for all intents and purposes, Shodan. (This was intended to be subtle -- Citadel Station and Shodan wouldn't have been referred to by name, but clues would have been left around for the observant to notice.) This idea was quickly abandoned after EA announced System Shock 2.
* Thief: The Dark Project has a minor, little-known Deus Ex easter egg. Watch the video that's played just before you start the Bafford Manor mission, and keep an eye on the cover of the book that the Keeper closes. (Most people didn't notice it when Thief first came out, because Deus Ex hadn't been released yet. In fact, it came out nearly two years later.)

Interesting stuff. Just 5 years? Wow, seems like a lot longer.

Found it!
It's incredibly dark, though -- not visible to the naked eye.
Here's a screen shot, brightened considerably to make the text visible:

so then: happy birthday!
hmmm, interesting. how does the title of the book go on? deus ex lu..?
and: "deus ex machina" and such was not invented by the Deus Ex-team. So why should this be a reference to the game? As you say, two years before it appeared... sounds a bit like the easter eggs that were written 100 years ago as references to the game :weird:

It'd just be a pretty big coincidence, seeing as how close the two teams were and the fact Deus Ex was being made at the time

I was thinking the anniversary was coming up, but wasn't sure when. 5 years old. It seems less than that for me, I must say. Perhaps because I replayed it recently.

I believe that there was some semi-official developer confirmation at one point that this was indeed a reference to the game, but I can't remember exactly when or where. Perhaps I'm mistaken.
Anyway, Happy Birthday DX!

I have Obsessive-Deus-Ex-Purchase syndrome. Whenever I see Deus Ex either in the shops or online for £5 or under (usually is), I buy it. I then give out copies to anyone I can make interested enough. It's an odd disposition, but hey it's cheap and can often changes the way people I know see the world.

I have Obsessive-Must-buy-books-referred-to-in-DeusEx syndrome. At leaset the Deus Ex obsession gives me a break from my usual Tolkien obsession
