Just noticed a post on Blues News about System Shock 2's 15th birthday. Either yesterday (11th - wikipedia) or today (12th - Blues News).

The post also mentions that Gamasutra have reposted Jonathan Chey's postmortem from December 1999.
Here's a direct link.

Vague memories from 1999:
Playing the game not long after it was released during the British summer and...
Y2K - oh how quaint that seems now!
I'd raise a glass of something stiff but my doctor wouldn't approve so it will have to be mineral water for me.

I vaguely remembered there being a total solar eclipse in 1999. Since I wasn't sure of the exact date, I decided to look it up. Sure enough, that also happened on August 11th. A total solar eclipse on the day of SHODAN's magnificent rebirth. This can't possibly be a coincidence, it must be a sign from the builder!
Anyway, Happy 15th!

I do remember that ... after being reminded of it. Thanks.
I live in Devon and I was helping a friend paint the outside of his house at the time and I remember going inside the house during the eclipse.
Somebody has put up a video on Youtube of the BBC's coverage anchored by Michael Burke (in all it's glorious 4:3 fullscreen aspect ratio). Actually there are quite a few Youtube uploads of the eclipse.
I won't embed the clip, but here's the link.

Now I also remember that solar eclipse. But I didn't play SS2 shortly after being released, because my computer wasn't good enough to run it. I had to wait for almost a full year before finally playing it.
And the original System Shock must be very close to turning 20, since I remember buying the floppy disk version in October 1994, shortly after coming out.

ahh, the hoops I had to go through to get my hands on on the game. and to make it run properly. almost can't believe it was so long ago. good old times.
