I'm trying out a "monk" character right now, sneaking my way through caves and punching the living daylights out of goblins. But will hand-to-hand be strong enough in later levels? Is it worth it, with no poison / magical effects to my attacks? It seems to knock down NPCs more than Blade, which I like, but it seems that it's really difficult to increase the damage dealt too. I only do about 4 damage right now, and I usually have to rely on some arrows or destruction magic to survive some timber wolves.
I just remember my previous character, a fairly generic blade warrior/assassin, having a pretty good time. Sometimes stuff was a little difficult, but anything humanoid was fairly easy to kill.
It just seems like hand-to-hand isn't worth it... I guess it probably isn't.

Aside from the shear comic value of a dude knocking out grizzly bears with his bear knuckles, there's absolutely no reason to bother with your fists at all. Monks kick ass and take names in D&D, not here :(

Just remember that you'll never be able to damage stuff that requires magic weapons to hit (unless one of the H2H perks enables this of course).

I'm fairly sure you can hit etheral things with your fists. Atleast you could in MW, I haven't tried it in OB.

Actually it's both possible and impossible to hit ghosts with your fists, I just don't know WHY. My first play though with just the mainquest was a pure hand to hand fighter and for the first half I had to shoot ghosts with magic just to kill them (attacking the ghosts gave me the message that my weapon couldn't damage it), but eventually I was able to punch them to death... undeath... redeath? Might have been the rings I had on (magical) or the gauntlets (also magical), but I'm guessing it's the skill level (not magical). Nothing else seems to carry over with equiped items and hand to hand combat, but then again I used light armor instead of heavy, in which case heavy gloves might do more damage, or something. :erg:
Blarg, all this talk of hand to hand makes me want to punch something. :ebil:

AFAIK, which admittedly isn't guaranteed to be accurate, at hand to hand of 50, your fists become 'magic' and can hit etheral creatures.

I thought I saw some mod that made hand-to-hand combat more powerful - link anyone?

the idea of hand to hadn having such capabilities seems to make the game seem a little.......cheesy....dont you think? It seems it would make teh game look somewhat like a joke to me....

BTW, what does the little fist symbol near the HTH skill mean? Can't find it in the manual...
Campaignjunkie on 26/4/2006 at 02:54
That's the damage you inflict with each punch, I believe.
