So what is the shit these days when it comes to hand helds? I'm looking for something to help kill down time especially when traveling. The last one I had was a Donkey Kong "game and watch" so it has been quite a while and I know pretty much jack shit about these devices apart from the odd name or two. From my initial readings I am partial to the PSP, but would like to hear from those of you who either keep up to date with this stuff or have experience with various devices.
Help me Internet... You're my only hope!

If you really only want to kill down time, you might want to look in the direction of smart phones.
Their biggest bonus on this front is that you have them with you even when you didn't plan on down time.
Their biggest drawback is that depending on their interface(s) they generally don't fit standard action games well. The games are not unplayable but things could feel better. That said, strategy (especially turn-based), adventure and puzzle games work well and are great fun.
Another great bonus is that phone apps/games are cheap when compared to their hand held counterparts.

I have looked into games for my phone (Nokia E63), but they seem to be very hit and miss as to whether they even work or not. I'm sure I'll still load up on a few though and hope for the best. I realise that this phone is not what you are really talking about, but I'm not about to get another. It does have a bunch of card games on it which keep me amused in small doses, but I'd prefer to get a console of some sort.

(

Have a look at the back catalog for the Nintendo DS series. There are some seriously fun games on there. I've never played on a PSP though I get the impression the games are more "serious" on it. Of course on the DS you get Mario, Mario Kart, Metroid, Zelda etc. I haven't used mine in a while but I have when traveling and it's been great on long plane journeys.

:beats TBE repeatedly in the kidneys then generally agrees with SubJeff:
The PSP actually has quite a few great games on it, but my preferences tend towards the DS. Mario, Zelda, Dragon Quest, Etrian Odyssey, Contra, Hotel Dusk, Moon, and a host of fun old GBA games (if you go with a DS Lite). The PSP definitely has the graphic advantage, but you just can't beat the DS's extensive catalog for pure fun per square inch.
Though if you do go with the PSP, stay away from the PSP Go. And then get Final Fantasy Tactics.

I've been looking at hand-helds as well. My goals are to have a pocket-size device that can play Doom, the thousands of user-maps, Duke Nukem 3D, Shadow Warrior, Wolf3d, Quake and possibly some others. The Dingoo A320 does most of this very well, but the specs are quite wimpy. (350 MHz CPU and 32 MB of RAM.
Then we have the GP2X Wiz and the Pandora. They are much more powerful, but I don't think Duke3d/SW have been ported to them yet. Doom and Quake certainly will be, due to the games' popularity.
Then again it isn't about how powerful a device is, but whether it does what you want or not. I'm tempted to get the A320, but I'll have to buy a mini-sd card too, since we have to have 100000 different flash memory form factors that aren't cross-compatible. It would cost roughly the same for a GP2X Wiz as the A320, because I already have a standard SD card.
