There hasn't been a good scary game thread in several years, so it seemed like a good time, given that it's Halloween week (or at least, the week prior to Halloween). It'd be great to hear what horror games everyone likes, and/or are playing right now. Even if it's all been said before, recommendations old and new are welcome.
Personally, I decided to dig into my various game libraries and try some games that I've never played before. Not saying I will finish all these, but I want to at least fire them up and see what they're all about. Here's what I'm hoping to get to:
PC - Lone Survivor, Deadly Premonition, Murdered Soul Suspect, Nosferatu
PS4 - Until Dawn
PS3 - Siren Blood Curse
Switch - Detention
2DS - Zero Escape Virtue's Last Reward (just picked this up)
I've always heard good things about a PC game called White Day, and I recently saw that it was re-released last year on Steam and in the PS store. Might take a shot at that as well.
Looks like the Steam Halloween sale will start (
https://www.vg247.com/2018/10/23/steam-halloween-autumn-winter-sales-dates-leak/) on Monday. I'm guessing we'll also see something on GOG. The Playstation Store is currently having a (

OK, let's play some scary shit.

Thanks for the reminder! I have a bunch of spooky games in the backlog and this is the only time of year that I can actually push myself to play them, so I should get on it. SOMA is at the top of the list, and that new (
http://www.callofcthulhu-game.com/en) Call of Cthulhu game that launches next week looks pretty good, although probably not full price good. I also started playing a hidden object game called (
https://store.steampowered.com/app/440420/True_Fear_Forsaken_Souls/) True Fear: Forsaken Souls which I chickened out on earlier but might continue. Outlast 1 and 2 will probably remain untouched yet another year.
While not games-related, I've also been listening to (
https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=lovecraft+audiobook) Lovecraft stuff on Youtube as bedtime stories, pretty much all of them are on there and a couple of the readers are really good.

Besides that, I'm thinking about picking up Outlast 2 since it's cheap on PS4 right now. Has anyone here played? How is it, compared to the first game?
Never finished Outlast, beat Outlast 2. It's a good, if not incredibly grim and fairly disturbing game.

Might be a good time to finally finish Alien: Isolation. Bought it on release, absolutely loved it, but chickened out at mission 14 and haven't touched it in four years.

I think I will load up Undying. Its old but a goody horror game.

Some recommendations for the Halloween season:
* F.E.A.R
* Observer
* Silent Hill 2

You should. It doesn't stick the landing in the most satisfying of ways, but it does an excellent job of getting there anyway. Mission 14 also had one of the most memorable environment designs in the entire game (and like the rest of the game, feels exactly like it should belong somewhere in the universe of the original 1979 movie), so really, just do et.
I'm putting Kitty Horrorshow's Anatomy on the list, seeing as it keeps coming up on RPS and I got it months ago, but have yet to boot it up. Longer nights means it's also a good time to give The Evil Within 2 a proper run through and see if I can finish that.
Meanwhile, I'm partway through Detention and can recommend that for anyone who needs a fix of Silent Hill vibes mixed with Taiwan's troubling history, presented as a dread-infused point 'n click game with excellent audio design and disturbing 2D art.

I should really finish Anatomy and check out more by the creator; I liked what I played, but I never finished it, though I find such games are best played in one sitting. Talking of scary games, I should also make a point of getting around to playing SOMA one of these days.
How's the writing in Detention, Sulphur? I have to say that I usually find it difficult to look past weak writing (or a wobbly translation), even if the underlying ideas are strong.

Detention does a pretty intelligent thing: it implies, and suggests, and lets you piece together what's happening through things that you see and pick up in the environment, so the writing itself is less important than the experience. The translation is fine, mostly polished with just minor niggles in one or two places, but at this point I haven't been far enough into it for the actual plot (and writing) to break through. I'll update once I've finished it; it's only about 4 hours long, from what I've read.
And SOMA, well - SOMA is definitely, without qualification, a game worth making the time for. It has its flaws (what doesn't?), but it more than makes up for those with zero jump scares, a healthy amount of thalassophobia, and a bravura goddamn story.
