So sue me if I have an intense dislike of covers bands. If I want to hear "Smells Like Teen Spirit", I'll put a Nirvana track on the jukebox. What I don't want is to see all-time classics reduced to a formless dirge by someone barely out of puberty who thinks he's God's gift to music.
As usual, your venom completely misses its target. It's as if you're so in love with big controversial statements that you forget that they only work when supported by fact. I consider you a homie, but you can be a bit of a hotheaded firestarter.
As for this, I'm not fond of cover bands either, but that doesn't change the fact that it takes a lot of work and discipline to be in a good cover band. Having a vast repetoire of songs on tap takes a ridiculous amount of skill and practice. On top of that, being in a cover band is one of the few ways local musicians can actually pay the bills with their craft, so to discount it entirely is short sighted. Most guys in cover bands
do write their own material, they just also have a mortgage and mouths to feed.
Cover bands aren't going to change the world, but if they help a musician meet rent as he writes his own magnum opus on the side, who the hell are you to look down them?
Edit: Shadowfax, I think we've already got this one under control without you raking him across the coals from two years ago.

That's fair enough. Maybe I've just heard too many bad cover bands to be really subjective about the whole thing (although my original comment wasn't meant entirely seriously, I guess that didn't really come over though). I'd still much rather hear guys sing their own stuff though.

It's not necessarily even about cover bands. It's just about learning new songs. Tabs are, more than anything else, a learning tool. If some kid wants to learn to play fast, he might use a Steve Vai song, but that doesn't mean he's going to be covering it.

Well, what the fuck man, is it rent or a mortgage? At least be consistent, this fuckin hypothetical cover-band playing bitch ain't got no place to live.

But what the fuck does the music industry (read: 'fucking greedy monopolistic bastards') actually want? How in the world publishing lyrics on internet deprives them of money??
jay pettitt on 20/12/2005 at 23:37
...well I guess they think there is a market in publishing music notation.
Obviously I think the big music biz consists almost entirely of morally bankrupt self servicing parasitical snivelling degenerate fucktards. But unofficial TABs is simple copyright infringement. Kids don't have a right to learn guitar you know, you lot will be suggesting children ought to be allowed to steal from mother america by drawing their favourite cartoon characters next. Want to enjoy commercial music? Pay for it - preferably in blood (or opiates, or genome patents). Do as you're told.

Everyone who plays in a cover band should probably be asking themselves this question anyway.
I play in both a cover and an original band. I make roughly $5,000 - $6,500 a month working about 6-8 nights in the cover band. Added perks - sex with my wife on a regular basis because I'm not off in some crotch smelling van in Podunk Virginia getting fucked by a promoter. I eat real, home cooked food. My kids know me. I pay the bills.
In the original band I make about....no wait....I LOSE about $220 a month toward promotion, equipment payments, studio time, etc.
How much does your original band make StD? What new, original, totally brand new sound have you invented that makes you too talented to cover a Beatles, Floyd, or Stones song? Please share your genius with us.

So do you pay a royalty or something? Only, if I started selling mickey mouse christmas cards I'd expect the CIA to fly me off to Eastern Europe pretty sharpish. What makes pop music different, or is it just that Disney has a history of fiercly protecting its copyright, but until recently EMI & co have been fairly easy going?
