Or in my case House Redoran
and Hlaalu:weird:
I guess that was the bug people were talking about...
As for your suggestion Chimpy Chompy, there is a little of that in Morrowind. Like being unable to join the Thieves Gulid if you do certain quests in the Fighters Guild or only being able to join one of the three houses ( ) or Vampire clans.
But it was interesting to note that once I'd mastered the Fighters Gulid (by avoiding the Cammna Tong (sp?) related quests, when I became Master of the Thieves Gulid Gentleman Jim commented on the fact that now the two guilds might overcome their differences and both become strong since I lead both (or words to that effect)

Yeah, that's the bug; for the curious, it revolves around Duke Vedam Dren (in the Ebonheart castle). If memory serves, if you kill his brother (in the Dren Plantation) then ask Vedam about something (his brother?) repeatedly, he gives rank in Hlaalu.
Btw, the only way to do more w/ Twin Lamps than get some books from Jubasha requires that you be Hlaalu. (Not counting mods, of course)

In my case I
didn't kill his brother so as a reward he gave me a rank in great house Hlaalu. The rank was something like "Grand Master" but when I look at my rank in the options menu I see that I'm at the lowest rank possible. Is this right?

That's about the size of it, yup.
By the way, how did you avoid killing Ovas Dren?

I assume you're talking about the main quest, and not the Thieves Guild quest.
When you're trying to become Horatator of House Hlaalu, instead of killing Orvas Dren, you can blackmail him by stealing the note inside a locked chest in his basement and confronting him with it.
Chimpy Chompy on 28/1/2004 at 22:53
Can't you just work his disposition as normal? I've never killed the guy and don't recall finding any note either...
Forsythe on 29/1/2004 at 00:01
Yeah, I don't recall the specifics, but maxing out his disposition works on either/both Hortator or Hlaalu, if forget which. Me, I just find it satisfying to blackmail the bastage ;) And yeah, I probably have it backward, tIT; try asking him about his brother repeatedly, he may give you another rank each time you do so.

I recall the discussion, I just don't believe we found a way to manage it... *reads* Oh, wait, yeah, you're 100% correct... you can get 'em if you interfere w/ the hunters. It's kind've cheating, from a design perspective, but it does work. Thanks for the correction ;)
