Just to check something: are the aircraft controls in SA horrible, or do I just suck? Cos if it's the latter i might give it another try - enjoyed it quite a lot for the most part. But pretty much gave up in frustration on the flying missions.
Use 1st person perspective controls if you can (I don't think all versions of SA have FPS flight controls, but my Xbox version certainly did).

On the PC, oh god yes they are terrible. On a console they are fine.

I've never really got into this series. I rented GTAIII once, and was put off by the rather clumsy control scheme. I didn't like how the player moved, I didn't like aiming/shooting, and after playing Driver (at the time) the cars in GTA felt flimsy and unsatisfying. Every time I saw a newer iteration things never seemed to improve. But with GTAIV it looks like they're finally putting some effort into these aspects. I'm not lining up for it, but I'm also curious to see if they were actually able to pull-off this real-world concept.

Dude just get Vice City and be done with it. If you don't like you it you've either got no soul or are 12.

Well, it's true that the control scheme for GTA was always rather clumsy on consoles.
You could only ever target people using the lock-on system (which didn't work particularly well), and the character couldn't strafe, so quite often - in order to get into a more favourable position - you had to turn around, run away, turn around again, then lock-on to your target again, etc. By that time, you were usually already dead. SA improved on this somewhat by including strafing and letting you toggle a cross-hair, so the game handled a bit more like e.g. Max Payne. It was quite evident that this system was merely tacked on to the old engine, but it worked nevertheless.
As far as I'm aware, the PC versions didn't have this problem, though, since they enabled strafing from the start.
Complaining about flimsy cars is a bit silly, though. Personal opinion, true, but I thought the handling of the cars (and the bikes, and the choppers, and the planes, etc.) was great. And as for their 'low health' (i.e. them taking damage and falling apart rather quickly), just get out of the car and get yourself a new one. That's part of the whole point of the game, anyway. It's called Grand Theft AUTO, after all.

Actually afair Vice City doesn't allow strafing. It was always an issue for me because it made combat really tough - as soon as you take aim you become a sitting duck.

lol. It actually is the easiest series of games I have ever played. Pc/console...either one. The only times you should be dying is falling in the water or an errant explosion.

I take it this is the PC version you're talking about? If so, very strange. I distinctly remember GTA III on my mate's PC including strafing, so no idea why Rockstar wouldn't include it with VC.

There's strafing in VC, on PC. I think SubEff is talking about the first-person aim-mode, which only worked on a few weapons and was pretty useless iirc.

They handle very poorly. Very
fakely. Play
Driver and you'll see what I mean -- that game did it very well.
But again, it looks as though their new engine is going to provide much better driving and walking (what with this Endorphin and all).

Or maybe it's just that my idea of "do whatever you want" isn't really the same as "kill people in thousands of ways". It's a sandbox that I don't want to play in.
