I am starting to head towards the end of the game, and I do feel that this has failed to top San Andreas. Firstly (and I want to check this out) but I do reckon the storyline in SA was longers. Secondly, it just doesn't feel as epic, which is what I was really dying for.
I'm far from finished but i fully agree so far. I really liked GTA:SA, this feels more restricted and somehow more linear. SA felt truly epic and i even prefered that character (i'm not into either black culture or hiphop), the character in GTA IV just feels like a stupid goon and it's very hard to have any kind of sympathy for him.

I completely hate the radio music in the game though. The trance station is the only one I can stand. The rest is just completely unknown bands.
I like that it's mostly unknown bands. For me, one of the great things about music in the GTA games is that it always introduces me to new styles and artists. Widens my horizons, y'know. VC got me listening to a lot more 80's pop. SA introduced me to a lot of great Country artists(Loretta Lynn, Jerry Reed, Hank Williams). In GTA4 I usually flip over to one of the Jazz channels or Electro-Choc. Blasting some John Coltrane or Justice while you zoom down Wall Street in a hot Porsche. S'all good.

I didn't wanna say anything till I had finished the game, but, yeah, I feel the same way. :erg: The game does so many new brilliant things at first that it takes a while before you notice all the stuff that's gone. And a lot of stuff is gone. Compared to SA, at least. Maybe they're holding back the planes and tanks for the downloadable content, or maybe the sequel. Not that I'm bitching, even
if that is the case, mind you. GTA4 has keept me entertained for a few weeks now already. Compared to most other games you are getting more than your money's worth of quality entertainment.

It also strikes me that there is less to do in this game than in SA, in that I can't figure out how to initiate Taxi/Ambulance missions.
Call Roman about a Job to get a Taxi mission. It works less smoothly than in earlier games though, as you have to phone in for each new fare. Dunno about Ambulances but I hear you can do Vigilante missions somehow by accessing the computers in the cop cars. You can also call LJ to get dope-peddling missions. And, of course, don't forget about Brucie's carjacking missions via e-mail.

Same here. Playing VC got me to buy the radio Espantoso soundtrack CD.
And while I don't usually like the music style that is played on the San Juan Sounds -radio station, somehow I can't get enough of the 8 songs that play in there. Nor in high enough volume :)
I just wish there would've been more.

I blame SA for getting me more into 70s rock.
Not GTA but related, the Warriors is to blame for my diving headfirst into 70s pop. Barry White is my new lord and master.

After reading through the posts (not all, but here and there), I guess I'm conflicted as to the general consensus of the game--is it worth going ahead and paying for an X-Box 360, or just wait for the PC version since I'm one of those that thinks Vice City is still tits and cheese.
So I ask: What number (1 to 10, one being the lowest) would you rate this game?

I would say it's the best game to come out since the last GTA game. Compared to earlier GTA games: 9/10 Compared to all other games: 10/10
Although as you may have deduced from this, and my earlier posts, I'm a huge GTA fanboi.

Wait for it, although it works well using a controller, I don't think you need to rush out and buy this game.

Are tits and cheese good? 'Cause they are in my book! (i just don't know what the hell that expression means...)
GTA IV is fantastic. If you like the GTA series at all, you will like this one. i love it. NYC modeled so closely is killer.
If you don't like the GTA series then you will probably not like this one.
i don't know that i would buy a 360 for this exclusively. However, Dead Rising, GTA IV, and Ninja Gaiden III together might warrant a purchase.
If you just want GTA though, then i'd wait for the PC. It is great, however. i've loved the GTA series since 10 years ago with the first GTA (which i still think ranks up with the new ones).

Just flipping through the soundtrack on wikipedia...I'm utterly amazed at the quality of most of the selections. Gong? Terry Riley? Bad Brains? Wow.

How could they not be? *realizing the implications of a newly minted catch-phrase*--COPYRIGHTED, DAMNIT!
