Anti-hero, if you will.

I think Garrett's a poor example, given that he's arguably the only moral character in the series besides Artemus.

I reckon the Hammers were moral, and Viktoria in her own way. Even the Keepers before Orland took over. That's kinda the point of the whole thing; Garrett ends up in the middle all the time because he's the one free guy unhindered by allegiance to greater ideology. (derailderailderail)

Garrett may end up doing good but he is anything but moral. That's like saying Mengele was moral because some of the experiments he did have aided medicine.

And this is one of those bullshit overstatements that make so many internet discussions pointless.
Arguably, Garrett likes to think he's a cynic, yet he tends to live by a code. He helps his friends, he reluctantly does the right thing. Depending on how you play him, he's also fairly ruthless when it comes to killing guards, but many people don't play him like that.
Comparing him to Mengele in terms of how moral (or not) he is, is tasteless and stupid.

I could see an argument for Garrett being a petty thief for much of the Dark Project. The further the series progresses the more virtuous Garrett becomes, imho. And pretty much everything from Escape! onwards is done for reasons besides pure greed.
Muzman on 5/5/2008 at 14:54
mm, revenge (derailderailderailderailderail. Though I agree. I think he does become somewhat more virtuous, or at least knowingly does the occasional virtuous thing in 2 & 3)

It is an overstatement, to be sure. But I find I need those sorts of overstatement or most of the netizens don't get it. Don't hate, man, it's not dumbed down for
you.

I discuss why I think Garrett is a bad guy. He is anything but moral.

You do realize that there can be shades of morality, right? And the grounding base of what is moral and what isn't is rooted in whatever a particular society values it to be.
In Garrett's world, where greed and injustice are the norm, even small good deeds can be seen as vastly more noble acts than what is considered status quo. The simple act of not killing someone when you have a choice can be seen as a heroic act in itself. And given this, I believe Garrett to be a relatively good guy in his world, especially considering where the storyline takes his character at the end.

Cash is plucked off of DEATH ROW for murder. He is not an anti-hero. He is a pawn in some fucked up game. Sort of like 'The Most Dangerous Game' short story, for those of you that read. He is as bad as the hunters and The Director himself.
Oh, and that isn't his wife and kids you rescue...it's your brothers, sisters, etc. Why would they have been mentioned before? Is any other game's characters' family mentioned? The game mentions you being estranged from them as well, and you don't have to save them at all. You can have them executed to save your own ass if you want.
Have any of you besides dethtoll even played the game, or just read about it?
