@Subjeff (because oh fucking pages)
The word in question is a very loaded word in US culture, particularly among the black community. I'm not going to ask you to understand just how loaded it is -- you wouldn't, you're not capable, even if you lived here, because you're you -- but you need to at least respect when people choose not to use the word directly. It's not silly at all, and it doesn't directly affect discussion about the word, except when some people insist on derailing the discussion to express their displeasure at some people not saying the word in full. If you have to use the word in full, go ahead and do it, but don't ask everyone else to do it too.

I don't expect anyone else to use it just as I don't expect anyone to swear if they aren't comfortable with it. I didn't swear for years, so much so that my gfs would comment on it, which I always found odd/thought that it said more about them than me.
And I grew up in Africa dude. I'm pretty sure I know how loaded the word is! Ha ha. I'm careful where and when I use the word because, well because it's a horrible word. You guys know I'm using it in discussion though, right? I'm not advocating using it everyday in normal discussion!
I do find it odd how scared people are to say it in the right context though. Different strokes.

Subjeff, do I have to remind you again that Africa and the United States are not the same thing? Apparently yes I do, and I probably will again because you never learn and you never will. It might be a nasty word in Africa (and I
know Africa (
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kaffir_(racial_term)) has its own fair share of terms that are as loaded there as the N word is in North America) but it carries nowhere near the same amount of cultural and historical weight as it does here. It is used almost exclusively in the United States (usage anywhere else is strictly an American export, like democracy and Taco Bell) and
the word's roots come from Colonial America to refer to African slaves. The word has a power here in the United States that simply doesn't exist anywhere else. I don't know how much plainer I can make this for you.
SubJeff on 19/9/2013 at 11:04
So because I grew up in Africa and not the USA I can never understand?
I'm not saying it has the same weight to Africans (in the Southern part of Africa I lived in you'd be in far, far more trouble if you called someone a kafir, yes) but that doesn't mean I don't get how loaded the word is. And what do you mean "It is used almost exclusively in the United States"? It most certainly isn't! I heard it more in a year in Malawi than I have in 10 years in the UK, including on TV. Regardless of how much it is used in the US, it's still used a lot in other parts of the world.

Back to the game; I'm on PS3 and I think it looks great.
I've never been a gfx whore though and it's just the scale of it, just on the ruin from the police!, that impresses me. Car handling is so much better than in GTA 4 too. And I like the cars.

Gotta say though, the way over the top ghetto speak (N-word this, N-word that) was getting old for me
real fast. I KNOW, it's GTA, but still. I did the first few missions, but I'm hoping I get a new character soon because it's going to drive me crazy insane.
Try spending a day in Flint, MI. 'Nigger' is used nonstop by real people that have found a way to turn it into a noun, verb, adjective--even a term of afffection. It's just the way many people here talk in real life.
So the game.... I STILL HAVEN'T BEEN ABLE TO PLAY THE FUCKING THING! Too damn busy. :(

Back in the day, it was games stopping you from doing everything else, not the other way round.
Renault on 19/9/2013 at 14:08
I haven't been able to play much either yet, but I had time to kill at work this morning before anyone else came in and ended up watching a half an hour of GTA Epic Fail vids on youtube. Christ, still wiping the tears from my eyes, that shit is hilarious. Looking forward to doing some of that myself soon.
So, can a white man EVER use the N-word in actual speech (not text) and it be acceptable? I think not. Oh wait, we're only talking about the game here.

Take that question over to comm chat where we can talk.
Finally, the game is installing. And now, I'm waiting and waiting and waiting....
BTW: My copy came with the blimp code, too.
