I was kind of hoping they would fix the gameplay in the remasters, but it looks they left it largely the same. I liked GTA and GTA2 a lot (and especially the GTA London expansion they did that was set in the 1960s), but I could never get into the 3D games, since they played like ass. I remember especially the flying missions being absolutely horrible. I think San Andreas was the only one I played all the way through and I had to really force myself to keep playing it.

Good, comprehensive video by Digital Foundry. They highlight a lot of issues I hadn't even noticed from looking at other videos.

I wish more companies would look at the way Nightdive does remasters, because that's all 3-D era games really need. Updates to run on modern hardware/OSes, some modern A/V and control options, and subtle/optional model/texture updates in the spirit of the original. And if anything, add content instead of removing it.

Heh. Some heads will roll at the Rockstar HQ, that's for sure.

I'm stunned that something like this made it through quality control.
Are they shorting their own stock or something?

This is one of those: Everyone should have seen this comming (and some did).
Rockstar handed off the remasters to (
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grove_Street_Games) a developer that has basically only done Android and iOS ports since 2010.
From the outside it seems as if the remasters were always intended to be a quick low-effort rush job to cash in on nostalgia.

This didn't age well:

Take-Two boss Strauss Zelnick was asked how he feels about remasters potentially becoming a bigger part of the company's strategy going forward.
“I'm not sure there'll be a bigger part of the strategy,” he responded. “Remastering has always been a part of the strategy. We've done differently than the competition - we don't just port titles over, we actually take the time to do the very best job we can making the title different for the new release, for the new technology that we're launching it on.

The thing is I dont have the originals anymore, only the Steam versions (which have been removed, although if you previously owned them you can still play) which are ports in themselves with the same radio tracks removed also. I have the original PC San Andreas dvd but its physically broken and wont work anymore.
So to actually play the originals on pc is a tough ask, I had hopes for these remasters but damn son.
