You know, I actually feel enlightened on the subject today, here's my answer to abortion: Who gives a crap what you think I should do? Religion will change their stance on abortion every 100 years, and I don't need to listen to their arguments about how abortion is against their beliefs when their beliefs are as fleeing as anything else. Since when does putting -by God at the end of every sentence somehow shields you from being called a fucking moron for your weird ideas?
If you live in a democracy, then other people's religious views WILL affect what you can do, because they get the vote as well. However, I'm not trying to make a point about whether abortion should be legal or not, that's just what started off the train of thought.

Then "technically" every time you jack off and dont "procreate" your commiting mass genicide since those are living things too technically :p.
They're living cells, but then, so are all the skin cells you kill every time you touch something. Sperm cells really don't count as "living organisms" under any rational definition, they're a small part of a much larger living organism (although only sharing half of its DNA) that just happens to get spat out as part of a natural bodily process. Anyone who tries to argue that ejaculation is genocide needs to be drowned in semen.

Oh boy, some of you zinged religion pretty hard up there. If I'd been a believer before, I'm almost positive I'd have entirely reversed my views or tried to find a more common consensus because of some of these epic god-burns!
RELIGION
Right guys????

My personal belief is the baby starts at procreation.
No really, when is it abortion? at 8 months, at 4 months, at 1 month, at fertilization? You're not committing genocide, but you have every right to be sarcastically anal about it.
Vigil on 10/11/2006 at 17:39
sarcastically anal more like if we all just said yes to anal then we wouldn't have all these troublesome moral quandaries in the first place
oh yeah I went there

A soul is just the emotional investment we put into things. This is why we kill flies with vigour and cry at the sight of seals being clubbed; seals have a soul, flies do not.
I can't wait for the day when we have a discussion about something worthwhile, because all the shit you Comm Chatters come up with is the same religious crap that doesn't tell us anything about anything. What about talking about fucking Euler, or Black Holes, or Moores Law or The Uncanny Valley or something that IS ACTUALLY INTERESTING AND BASED ON FACTS

And you are bang on the money. Mankind's progress has been hampered at every stage by a constant need to reconcile that progress with the "will of God". Only by removing the very question of God from science can mankind truly make advances towards the Godlike.
Amen, brother!

Somebody needs to develop an Ethical Calculus so we can relegate behavior through mathematical certainty.

But then won't that make us a bunch of intolerant jealous homophobes prone to smiting unbelievers and suchlike in order to display power and gratify our egos? I think we should instead imitate prokaryotes because single-celled organisms don't hate.
I like the idea of growing meat in labs and goading (
http://www.lloydianaspects.co.uk/opinion/opinion.html) vegetarians/vegans into eating it though. Then I'd say "HAHA that was regular meat, you ate an animal raised and killed for your consumption", but it would be too late for them because they'd be hooked by the delicious murder.

Now who ever made that distinction? A baby seal is cute and cuddly, and most people assume innocent. That's why we don't like to see them get clubbed. Larger animals with more developed brains tend to show a more defined 'personality (if you can call it that in something that isn't a person) than something like a fly. And to put it plainly, flies are pesky. They prey on us for food and can be extremely annoying when nearby. It has nothing to do with a "Soul".
