I've played through the game a couple of times and may have missed some reading that would highlight this question. Does anyone know for sure if they are truly aliens or constructs? I'm guessing constructs since this would go well with MJ12's fetish for genetic abominations, but the 'real' Majestic 12 has it's roots in the UFO business of the 1950s no?

I'm partial to the aliens as genetic anomolies theory myself, if for nothing more than I don't think the idea of actual aliens fits in with the DX world very well.
They don't play any significant part and they act a lot like stupid animals. The notion that MJ12 is working with extraterrestrials just complicates things unnecessarily without adding anything to the story line. IMO.

I can't remember the place to verify this (sorry) but they are UC products like the Greasel and the Karkian. The two places which mentioned the Grays are at Versalife and obviously at Area51. It seems that these are the second batch of Grays, the first batch being related somehow to the bovine manipulation project. Further more, the Gray is no big deal to the MJ12, and they use it as a means of distracting people from Project Dreamland of which we know nothing about.

I quite liked the idea of "aliens" being created as a red herring to distract the population from the REAL conspiracies going on.

Well that is what people have been saying. All that Roswell stuff was misinformation leaked out on purpose to take attention away from the more mundane and normal military research they do.

As far as I know, they're "real" aliens, but not from outer space. According to DeusEx story, they were made on Earth, using alien DNA found in Roswell... So they probably can't tell you, how does it feel to walk naked on the surface of Mars:p .

The thing that bothers me about all the nano-constructs is that they seem to be in a lot of MJ12 facilities, but not really for any specific reason. The grays most likely were made to distract the public, and the karkians (and assumably the greasels as well) were made to "throw the older scientists a bone", or something like that, and yet they all seem to be undergoing research in MJ12 facilities. I wonder if some of them were actually created not just to distract the public, but also the researchers themselves? I imagine that the guys at Versalife and Area 51 would be much less likely to notice or have time to fully comprehend the scale of Page's plans if they were busy with "alien" disections and such.
Additional fun fact: The first time I visited the Versalife building, I tried to kill the penned grays. I took one down, but the lingering radiation from it's body killed me moments later, and for some reason the reason didn't strike me at the time. Did this cause me to believe that the grays had some sort of undodgeable, powerful attack that not even their deaths could stop, leaving me to fear them for almost all of the rest of the game? Yes, yes it did.

Interesting idea. I mean any spy (could be a scientist too) going into the labs would be most impressed with the animals and focused less on the other research.
