I dont know what went on on that bus. but I know a lot of people are freaking out because nobody stopped the guy. From how many times' i've heard about "what I would've done on that bus" i'm sure there were a handful of guys who would've had the same reaction as everybody else commenting on it from the outside.
A great deal of people love to fantasize about heroically wresting the gun from a maniac's hands, but it's a joke to think you'd really run at a guy wielding a sizeable knife in the cramped confines of a bus. Anybody seriously railing at the passengers for not trying to stop him is an idiot

I would've taken a stab at it.

I hear shug's taken people unaware from behind on greyhound buses before.

What my wife kept telling me was that she was so disgusted with people because all they thought about was themselves. I argued that by the time they realized what was going on there was no saving the guy. "you can't KNOW that a person is dead unless you're a coroner or something, you dont have the training" was her argument. I dont think I need training to know that the chances of survival for a guy who's already been stabbed int he chest and neck over a dozen times before you figure out whats going on are a good bit shy of slim.
I think the guys that took action by getting people off the bus and making sure the sociopath didn't get away did the best they could've, and I dont critisize them for it.
Arguing the other way is kind of like saying the proper course of action after being bitten by a lethal snake is to immediately chase it down and kill it.

I'd suspect half the people on the bus had no idea what was going on, considering the high-backed bus seats would block the view of most passengers. Not a great spot for evaluating the condition of the victim, not to mention it's a lot easier deciding what you might have done in the comfort of your own home

I'M GOING TO VOICE MY OPINION ANONYMOUSLY ON THE INTERNET ON AN INCIDENT THAT HAPPENED IN ANOTHER CONTINENT ABOUT WHAT I WOULD HAVE DONE IN THAT INCIDENT ALTHOUGH I'VE NEVER BEEN IN AN INCIDENT OF THAT SORT BEFORE IN MY LIFE WITH LIMITED KNOWLEDGE OF WHAT ACTUALLY HAPPENED DURING THE INCIDENT AND WITHOUT ACKNOWLEDGING THE FACT THAT MY PERSONAL, EMOTIONAL AND PHYSICAL DISTANCE FROM THE INCIDENT IMPAIRS MY ABILITY TO ACCURATELY JUDGE WHAT I WOULD DO IN AFOREMENTIONED INCIDENT
