The only bus I've ever been on took me to basic training. Don't get on that one. The end part really sucks.

it took me 8 hours on greyhound what was usually 4 hours in a car. Not sure if this inflation holds true for such a long distance though.

What about renting a car?
Assuming the vehicle is the cheapest POS that gets at least 30 mpg, then:
Roughly 3 tanks of gas each way = ~$90
Rental + insurance = ~$40/day
If money is the single most important factor, than doggy bus seems to be the logical choice. I think how you'll enjoy the ride will depend entirely on what company you get, as others have hinted. As for me, it probably wouldn't matter who sits next to me, since I'm very likely to be asleep most of the time. Actually, scratch that. I don't think I can handle sitting next to a stinko, either.

It takes, I think, 18 hours to drive there myself. That's assuming I don't get lost (likely since I have the directional aptitude of a plastic compass). Not to mention I'm driving in winter. Someone may have to check me on this, but I'm fairly certain a bus would be safer than a car if the roads are icy or snowy.
Not to mention it's still cheaper even if my parents let me borrow one of their cars.
I'm pretty certain Greyhound is going to be my best bet. Thanks a lot you guys. (If I get mugged or killed, the blood is on ALL of your hands. Even the nay-sayers.)

I once took a greyhound bus from Columbus, Ohio .
I live in Columbus, and before I got a car I used Greyhound 3-4 times a year to go to Toledo, and once to Charleston, SC and back. UGH. I hope to never set foot on another GH bus again. Most of the bad points have already been shared here, but just rememeber this: the only good point is the price. You get what yoiu pay for and what you pay for is crap.
