It has amunition for pretty much any situation(even setting booby traps), it only costs ten CM to be able to use, and the only real downside I can see for it once you've fully upgraded the thing is the cost of ammunition.
Still its just wonderful to lob Death into a crowded room, almost as satisfying as the oh so distinctive double click of a shotgun.

Yes, probably. Especially considering it only requires Heavy 1. However when you already have the Assault Rifle... well... what's a little more overpowerage (that's a word because I just made it up).

Sure the grenade launcher is powerful, but it does have some mitigating factors--
All the different grenade types take a huge amount of inventory space
You have to cycle through all those different types to find the "right" one for any given situation
No good for close combat / pretty easy to kill yourself
Slow reload

All very valid points ZB, and while there is that certaitn satisfaction that comes with seeing a really wonderful crowd control weapon at work it just feels like there should've been something else as heavy weapon's first avalible toy.

Both valid points, however you have to remember that heavy weapons on a space-ship would be slightly rarer, as they pose a risk to the stability of the ship, hence it would be unlikley that there would be rocket-launchers, flame throwers etc, all of which could cause the ship to go BOOM if fired at the wrong place.
Secondly it is a tatical weapon, and requires more skill to use than a pistol, AR rifle etc, as a badly aimed 'nade is a death sentence.

ALL the player's weapons are tactical. The only strategic weapons are in the Rickenbacker's launch tubes.

Even if it does take a while to find the right ammo to use, when you do manage to get it the GL is horrendously powerful. IIRC, no standard enemy stands up to more then 2 of the right grenade.

On the flip side it is absolutly indespensable when you hit the BotM. At least hwen playing through the way I do it is.
ZylonBane on 21/8/2006 at 01:17
The only way it would be indispensable would be if you went into the BotM carrying nothing but grenade launcher ammo.

I've played through SS2 loads of times, some of which I haven't even touched the nade launcher and it's not as though I'm leet or anything either. SS2 just isn't that hard of a game. Ok with wrench maybe, but alot of weapons are retardly overpowered and as a result make it all rather easy.
