Greg has risen to impressive heights as the vice president of product development at Harmonix, makers of world famous games like Guitar Hero and Rock Band, but he got his start at Looking Glass back in the 90s. Coming from the music industry (he was bass guitarist in the Boston-based rock band Tribe) he started out as music/sound designer on System Shock, eventually becoming project lead on Thief 1. I talk with Greg about his roots in the music business, how he adapted to the culture of video games and software design, and how that has affected his approach to game development overall.
If you ever wanted to know how SHODAN's voice came about, be sure to give it a listen!

Again, thanks to all involved!
Who else was in the room with Greg and yourself?

Abe, the sound guy who was doing the recording. He popped in a few times because he's an audio designer himself and had some good questions.

Thanks. Abe Stein, right? It'll help with the transcribing, as well as giving credit where credit is due.

I was going to post in defense of the interview technique before but never got around to it. But this time there were a couple of instances where I was like "Dude stop talking and let the man speak!" :D
Don't worry about it. These are great.
The audio design stuff was good. I do that sort of thing and I remember it dawning on me that there really would have been only one way to do Shodan's effect back in SS1: the hard way (probably true of 2 as well, but tools would have improved somewhat)
It's probably too late now but I'm curious to hear how the Keepers got into Thief dug out, as that's a tidbit that I hadn't heard before (I knew stuff changed after Ken left, but I never heard that part. Pretty fundamental to the whole thing in the end. Indeed, if you look at Levine's ourve afterwards he really does like having binary opposing forces/ideals and the player in the middle. Thief is the only one with his stamp on it so far that has three and now we know why)
