Apparently I can't play this game because every great album I have in mind upon wikipaedia search ends up not actually being a debut album ... just the first break-away album that really put the band on the map, even though the debut album itself was a dud. Or like Nirvana, their 2nd album was the big one, while the first one was just good but obscure enough to be on the fringes of something great.
Also, this thread won't include something like Dave Matthews Band, whose first two albums were independent releases that really didn't get significant distribution, but the first big-label album *Under the Table and Dreaming* hit big.
By the way, I like bands that are just the opposite of this thread's target ... absolute small endeavors that hit big some time later, like U2.
And did I seriously see Bob Newhart just mentioned?

The Mars Volta - De-Loused in the Comatorium is pretty rockin for a first album but for some reason it doesn't feel like it counts.
Probably because of "At The Drive-In"

Didn't I see this in "High Fidelity"?

Medeski Martin and Wood's 'Notes from the Underground' is a really great debut album, in fact I'd rate it as highly as their latest stuff (if not higher). It was just recently reissued, so I was able to get it in a record store.
Soul Coughing's debut, Ruby Vroom, is better than a lot of thier latter works (not that there were very many).
I'm not entirely sure if this is a debut, but Chick Corea's 'Now He Sings, Now He Sobs' is a pretty amazing debut, considering the talent he exhibits (both playing and composing) at such a young age. A lot of pianists (including myself) will go thier whole lives without achieving the skill level he was at at 20.

Have you listened to the Wood Brothers debut? It's amazing, and you really see another side of Chris Wood. I really enjoy his brother's guitar playing.

I haven't but I heard them on XM a few days ago. Thought they sounded really good, I'd even consider picking up the album.

Ok, ok ... I knew I could think of at least one:
August and Everything After from Counting Crows ... and, and...
Tigermilk from Belle & Sebastian.
whew, ok... I love both of those and, sure enough, debut they are.

YEA
Why? Because it's KILLER, that's why.
Would also have accepted:
Pixies - Surfer Rosa

Arcade Fire - Funeral
Quoted for truth.
Also Godspeed You Black Emperor! - f#a#∞ although it's not my favourite album of theirs.
And how could I forget Goldfrapp - Felt Mountain to which I was introduced recently. To offset the amazing debut album, the later ones aren't very memorable.
