What do you mean uncharacteristic? Are you saying ordinarily he is dumb as a brick?:)
And where are my asinine comments? I DEMAND MY ASININE COMMENTS! THE CRICKETS! THE CRICKETS! DIDN'T ANYONE CLICK AT ALL?
Scots Taffer on 11/5/2006 at 11:39
Did you just say Shug had no dick? Or something that rhymed to that effect?
Tocky on 11/5/2006 at 11:50
Of course not. If he had no dick I would be chatting up the sexy bastard.
THE CRICKETS! THE CRICKETS! THEY BORE INTO MY BRAIN!

James Blunt needs to die a violent fiery death, preferably involving 20 ex-wrestlers and a vat of strawberry jam, all while wallowing in the guts of a dead sperm whale. That is all.
Spamlet on 12/5/2006 at 23:20
Piglick,
That was both hilarious and true.
I disagree with the Bjork argument- solo debuts are just that: Debut albums. I'm not going to count some ultra-rare e.p./demo thing no one can aquire. Nor does it matter to me whether it's the artist's best overall album. Here are some of my favorites which were not yet mentioned:
Damien Rice-"O"
The Band-"Music from Big Pink"
Leonard Cohen-"The Songs of Leonard Cohen"
Television-"Marquee Moon"
Rilo Kiley-"Take-Offs & Landings"
Bruce Springsten-"Greetings from Asbury Park, N.J."
Wolf Parade-"Apologies to the Queen Mary"
Madonna-"Madonna"
The Shins-"Oh, Inverted World"
Wire-"Pink Flag"
The Postal Service-"The Postal Service"
Joan Osborne-"Relish"
The Fiery Furnaces-"Gallowsbird's Bark"
The Cars-"The Cars"
Beth Orton-"Trailer Park"
Foo Fighters-"Foo Fighters"
Kanye West-"The College Dropout"
Martha Wainwright-"Martha Wainwright"
The Black Crowes-"Shake Your Moneymaker"
Tracy Chapman-"Tracy Chapman"
Decemberists-"Castaways and Cutouts"
Ice Cube-"AmeriKKKa's Most Wanted"
Portishead-"Dummy"
Liz Phair-"Exile in Guyville"
Spin Doctors-"Pocket Full of Kryptonite"
Neutral Milk Hotel-"On Avery Island"
Beck-"Mellow Gold"
The Strokes-"Is This It?"
Laura Veirs-"Troubled by the Fire"
Whiskeytown-"Faithless Street"

Grace by Jeff Buckley is pretty great for a debut. However it's probably viewed in too positive a light because it's his only completed studio album, but it's still a surprising and somewhat legendary debut.

Jesus Christ.
Looking back over this thread I have to say I agree with damned near every "Best Debut Album" in it. Except maybe Ice Cube... Amerikkka's Most Wanted was really good, but it's not a PATCH on Predator or Death Certificate. I was tempted to suggest NWA, but then I realised that Straight Outta Compton wasn't the debut. And PE didn't pick up enough real steam until Nation of Millions.
Also Decemberist's Picaresque is a strong ass-kick against Castaways & Cutouts... But I still can't decide.
(edit)
Oh shit
Pretty Hate Machine
Seriously, everything that bitch has done since has been TOTAL downhill
BlackErtai on 14/5/2006 at 07:55
Oh man, Whiskeytown! I completely forgot about that album. It's definitely an amazing debut, just like Uncle Tupelo's or Golden Smog's.
Hate the game, not the player.
Gingerbread Man on 14/5/2006 at 08:09
Also annoyed that Paul's Boutique wasn't a debut. Jesus, can you imagine if it HAD BEEN?

Edison - Mary Had A Little Lamb
That was pretty ground breaking.
