Loving the game, what I can play of it that is !! What a bloody bug fest this game is - 3 fatal errors now & I really don't think I can be arsed to start all over again !!
Thought the 3rd time was going great, but fatal memory error in maze in crypt. Previous 2 times before the fatal error I had a lot of strange things going on, mostly loading games with a new character & sometimes jumping to areas I haven't explored yet. NPCs doing odd things, like fishing in the middle of town & once the main quest re-set itself after getting krahoz & zorhark.
And no, I really don't think it is my computer, the game is almost a decade old now & my computer can handle games released much sooner.
Oh well .... like I said, great game, shame about the bugs - I would love to finish it.
another thing - the heroism ring from Oliver's Quest just does not exist for me - did the quest, not there; didn't do the quest - not there; only read the sign - not there; only put the emerald in the chest - not there.
Anyone else have such an array of problems or am I just special ??

I don't know much about the fatal errors. I have seen nothing about them from patch 1.17 on. Could you link where you found this?
As for the ring its in a specific spot. Try downloading the rpg guide referenced in an earlier thread below. It will give you specific instructions. You might want to make sure you are using the shovel the right way as well. There are other threads on this too.
Before giving up try playing with patching just to 1.17 as that was the last official wide spread patch. The other 2 were made for rereleases for game of the year and gog.
Let me know how it goes!:thumb::angel:

Hi - thanks for the reply. Not sure how to "roll back" versions, bought 1.19 just recently, was a bargain & guess I know why. :cheeky:
Found many people having similar fatal error probs in another forum, their solution seemed to be to play it in windows 95 compatibility mode.
Maybe I'll reinstall the game .. again !! ... and try that.

oh yeah, about the ring quest, I have the pdf guide & have done everything in every way shape & form with that bloody shovel on that ledge.
I've used it successfully before in the earth goblin quest, presumably it doesn't change how it's used ?

You must have the gog version. I don't know much about that one unfortunately.
If you read the sign in the pub first and did everything else in order, then I'd say gog messed it up. I'm not sure how to roll back from there.
What forum are the problems in? Can you give a link?:thumb::angel:

Neforun,
I can't speak to your specific issues, but let me assure you, Arx Fatalis is absolutely worth not giving up on. I had several technical issues during my first playthrough, and abandoned it, then tried again after several months, and got through the whole game. It was TOTALLY worth finishing. Let me encourage you not to give up.
I can verify that v1.17 works on most modern hardware, and any issues you may have are well documented here and on other sites. Don't give up.
As you've purchased the game, I see nothing morally wrong with finding "some friend somewhere..." that can give you the CD version of the game. Then update to 1.17 and see if it resolves your issues. I doubt the 1.19 saves work with 1.17 but I haven't heard of anybody trying. This route is probably best.
Most folks have 1.17 due to the 1.19 not being officially released to the public. You will have much better support with 1.17.
At the very least you can replay it, and it's fun to try doing things out of order. It can yield some interesting (and fun) results.
My main point is don't give up. Arx is a great game. I'm glad I suffered through getting it to work. You will be too. :)
-----------
EDIT: Just found some info possibly related to your fatal errors. Try running Arx in Win98 compatibility mode. See if that takes care of your errors. Good luck! :thumb:

Hi furious
yep, I did something like the "friend thing" and now have 1.17 which is running fine. So here we go again ... :D
sting - I came across another forum through frantic searching. I'll see if I can find it again & post a link.
Cheers
