Is it normal for me to have a little slowdown in big areas?
I have a RADEON 9500 "moded" into a 9700.
Or is something wrong

It shouldn't be significant, i.e. enough to affect gameplay, but is to be expected. Try turning down the world detail settings to improve performance.
Type "stat fps" at the console (press T, delete say, type the command, press enter) to get live information on your FPS. Mine varies between 50-60 in small rooms to 15-20 looking across wide spaces.
