I know this is probably a long shot, but did anyone play this game? It's called Gorky 17 in Europe and Odium in USA. I've installed it but when I try to start it I only get a black screen. I can hear the music playing, but the screen is black. And I can't even Alt-Tab out of it, I have to restart my computer manually.
The game is from 1999. I've tried changing compatibility modes, but that didn't help.
Specs are:
P4 1.6
384 MB RAM
ATI 9550
Win XP

tried disabling hyperthreading?

As you can see from my specs, this is pretty old computer and it doesn't have hyperthreading.

Try using the Software Renderer.
Odium has some of the best soundtracks and turn-based combat in all of gaming. Btw, these same people joined later to make Painkiller.

I think I tried using all options (software, primary driver and D3D) but the same thing happened. I'm reinstalling it now to see if that will help. Hope that I will not be forced to use older drivers for my graphic card.
Edit: Did you play the sequels and are they any good? I've read somewhere that the second one wasn't published in English and that the third one is more like Splinter Cell.
Edit #2: OK I've reinstalled the game to a different partition, tried all 3 options (software renderer, primary display driver and radeon X1050 series direct 3D HAL) but it still doesn't work.
But since I can hear the sound of intro playing while the screen is black, I thought it was videos playing problem and I was right. While google-ing for "Odium patch" I've found a no-intro patch and with that I can get to main menu, but as soon as I try to start a new game the screen freezes with main menu image and the sound of first cutscene plays. I can watch cutscenes and intro from Odium CD without problems.
I've tried installing Windows Media Player of Odium CD, but it says it's not supported on Win2000. I have Windows Media Player version 9 on my computer as well as Media Player Classic from K-lite codec pack. I guess I could try installing the latest WMP, but I'm not sure that will help.
Edit #3: I've got it to work by renaming all the files in AVI folder. Now the cutscenes don't work in game (I can still watch them out of game) but I can play the game.

Good to know you can play it now.
Don't bother with the sub-par sequels. Weren't made by the same people, either.

Yes I taught that sequels aren't as good as the first one, but I just wanted to be sure.
While the game is sometimes hard, it's a great game.
