I was hoping Netscape to do this back in 1998, but they never could.

It's a lightweight web-centric OS. If you want to game on it, you're not the target demographic.
Perhaps I'll have it on a laptop then.
I wonder how many people would not use Chrome OS because it will not support a wide range of games. I'm not interested in Linux for precisely this reason. That and the work-must-use-Office thing. Gaming is so widespread and I know lots of people who, whilst not serious gamers like most of TTLG, have a game or two that requires a fairly powerful set-up. How many people would be willing to give that ability up? Chrome OS is being touted as a competitor to MS so I think we can afford to disregard existing Linux gayboys at the moment. And it would make sense for MMOs to be Chrome OS compatible I suppose.
Regarding thread title: they aren't ready, they've done it.

At this point, I'd be surprised if Chrome OS were to offer gaming support anywhere near the point it might market itself as an alternative to Windows even to less dedicated gamers.
However, this is an interesting point - what if it does? Maybe not now, but in a year, or fairly soon anyhow. What would be Microsoft's move in response to this? Would they be enticed to increase support for Windows-based gaming, to consolidate that market against such a competitor, or would they attempt to dedicate their attention even further to the Xbox division to the disadvantage of the Windows PC platform?

This is very, very interesting, especially the bit about it being pretty much exclusively for machines that are net connected. Open source too. My only reservation would be gaming compatibility
Flash games?
