Put a stake in the exact spot your father stood on. Tie the end of a spool of thread or string to the stake.
Reel out enough to get to the edge of what you think it the search zone. Take a flashlight at dusk or later and scan the ground an inch at a time the arch of the string.
Search from your feet to about 2 feet in front of you. Then let out about a foot of string and repeat in the opposite direction. Continue back and forth until you reach what you judge to be the extreme limit.
The ring is polished gold. It might reflect in the flashlight beam. Just take extra care to look where you plan to step before you move that foot. If you step on it without seeing it your chances go down.
The ring is slightly heavier than the dumped debris and should have landed beyond the actual place the garbage landed on.
Take it slow and easy and be sure to move the beam of light in a sweeping motion so as to hit the area at differing angles. The ring might reflect at one angle and not another.
Figure a search area as a cone with the point at the stake, and about 15 feet wide at the extreme.
If you really want to get serious grid the area off. Make a frame of PVC pipe about one metre by one metre. Lay it on the ground. Search inside it. Then ROLL it to the left (like turning the page of a book) repeat the search and continue in like manner until you reach the side extreme of your search area.
Then flip it UP in the same manner, search then flip it right and continue to the other extreme, the repeat.
Do that until you have covered the entire suspect area.

Create a gollum-like creature to seek it out.
I suggest chaining a small child in a windowless basement with a bucket of fish-heads to start the process off.
I think you'll do just fine.
