My father was never a careful or fortunate man. He always loses and forgets about things. More than once I have seen him walk into a room with an sincere expression of total loss as to what he may have wanted there. I have also had the displeasure of riding in a car with him and having him realize ten to twenty minutes into the trip that he forgot his license. Also, he never misses an opportunity to get into trouble. I have always been able to help him out, but now I am at a loss as to what to do.
The situation is this: While throwing away some kitchen refuse out into the woods from an overlook, my father's wedding ring (made of eastern red gold) slipped off and flew into the woods, landing on an overgrown hill near a swamp patch. After spending half an hour sifting in that humid trap, I am ready to try another method. I ask you for suggestions.

I asked for that...but seriously:
A metal detector could easily pick up gold, but the thing is, that hill has been use as a dump for several things, including burned-out useless iron*. A metal detector would be picking up the entire hill. I'm not sure if anything can actually help, I'm just looking for ideas. If not, then whatever.
*-Sorry for leaving out that "minor" detail.

Obviously you must travel in time and steal the ring from yourself then give it back after you should have lost it. You can pick up a time machine on ebay for a few million dollars.

I think the moral here is to not throw your garbage into the woods.
Then again, in the wilds of Russia (is that where you are?), I guess you may not have much choice.

I suggest chaining a small child in a windowless basement with a bucket of fish-heads to start the process off.

It abandoned you. When the ring wants to be found, it will be found. But hiding in a fetid dump is foul even for that ring. :eww:
