I think there's a good chance you'll like this one better. I only have access the first part of the game, but it gives you a pretty good sense of the history and people of the little island you're on. It does lean on a lot on the more fantastical aspects of the original, it presents them in a much more grounded and patient fashion.
Oh, and the PCs are much, MUCH more interesting this go-round.
BUT ANYWAY...let's get back on topic here. :P

Curious to see that in action. I disliked the writing and tone in
D:OS, to the extent where I don't remember anything much about the game's plot and characters. It's not that I want my RPGs to be dour, but I want the games to have a coherent, believable world and characters, and for me the humour of
D:OS was generally at the expense of those things.
You know, I felt the same way when I played it in single-player. It was only mildly interesting from a universe standpoint, and the text has a tendency to be verbose with fairly drawn-out jokes. All of that remains true in co-op but it still shines, because there's just so many ways to mess around with things in its simulation, combined with fun inter-dependencies -- for example, if one of your characters has Pet Pal, your co-op partner can listen in on those bonkers animal VOs, plus quest decisions may lead to conflicts of opinion that lead to an impasse only solvable by a bout of rock-paper-scissors. It's endearingly stupid with company.

I'm thinking I'll definitely have to check out D:OS2's coop mode once it's out. You guys have said so many good things about the first game's coop mode.
As a matter of fact, perhaps I should check out the first game on PS4 - it might be a way to get my wife to branch out into different genres.

Good co-op games:
Now you didn't specific a cut off year date, so your getting a list of whatever year's good co-op games I can think of:
PC:
AvP 1 & 2
Doom 1 & 2
Heretic
Hexen
Starcraft (against AI opponents)
System Shock 2
Arcade:
(Good luck even finding half of these)
Bubble Bobble
Dance Dance Revolution (2 player DDR can be quite awesome)
Double Dragon
Final Fight
Gauntlet
Golden Axe
Marvel vs Capcom
Metal Slug
Rampage

AvP has coop?!
PC coop recommendations (none too overtly shooty):
(
http://store.steampowered.com/app/290530) Clandestine - coop stealth, with only one player physically infiltrating. The other is a hacker assisting them.
Splinter Cell (
http://store.steampowered.com/app/33229/Tom_Clancys_Splinter_Cell_Conviction_Deluxe_Edition/) Conviction and (
http://store.steampowered.com/app/235600/Tom_Clancys_Splinter_Cell_Blacklist/) Blacklist are also stealth games, but more shooty if you want them to be. Conviction's co-op has its own story arc, which is neat. Blacklist is just a list of missions, but it's less focused on just murdering everything.
The (
http://store.steampowered.com/bundle/721/Trinelogy/) entire Trine series is, like the Lara Croft games, half puzzling half combat.
Even though it's nothing but mindless shooting, I'm going to recommend the Earth Defense Force 4.1 ((
http://store.steampowered.com/app/410320/EARTH_DEFENSE_FORCE_41_The_Shadow_of_New_Despair/) PC/PS4), or any game in the series (it stretches back to Xbox 360 and PS2). It's a ridiculous game that doesn't take itself too seriously, but it can get very challenging later on, and will require some actual tactics. Recommend you start on Hard difficulty to get some good weapons right out of the gate.
More shooty-only games that are great fun: Sniper Elite 2-4, Resident Evil 5 and 6, Narco Terror, all Metal Slug games, FEAR 3.
Anyone try (
http://store.steampowered.com/app/512220/Trickster_VR_Coop_Dungeon_Crawler/) Trickster VR yet? Seems like it might be a neat thing. Maybe when it's out of early access.

Ooo, that looks and sounds like it could be fun, and a worthy addition to the Saturday Co-op rota if it turns out to be good!

Diablo 3 is supposed to be the best couch co-op hack n slash experience on the PS4 and it's dirt cheap.

Maybe Don't Starve Together?
Cooperative survival. Not too much combat, though you do have to fight off beasts occasionally.

Ooh, yes! Diablo 3 on PS4 is great co-op fun. It's not much of a challenge, mind you, but it's a great way to relax after a day at work.
