Obviously you didn't witness the 2004 US election, with the whole "terrorists will blow up the USA is Kerry is elected" thing.

Is Sarkozy further to the right than Blair?
Just about.
By rights I ought to be horrified at his election, but France's economy has been allowed to become so decrepit that only a Thatcherite free marketeer with balls of steel can fix it. Let's hope he spends more time making France competitive and less time picking on immigrants.
@ Aero: did Bush really say come out and something like that? I must say I don't recall him being quite as direct as that.

Cheney said it.

And wasn't there rioting in France a few years back after a far right conservative won the election, and they ran a second election?
rachel on 6/5/2007 at 20:20
No.
The far right qualified for the second round, and people massively went to vote Chirac in for a second term with a record 82% score.
It's a real shame.
That country is crazy. They scream they want change and then they elect the same people all over again. I'm even more depressed than when they rejected the Treaty for the EU Constitution.
This guy is a disgrace. He will never be my President.

Cheney and Rove both said it, I dont remember the exact quote but it was basically 'If they get elected we will get hit again'.

Rudy Giuliani recently said something similar about withdrawing from Iraq..."they'll follow us home" type of crap.

Oh come on, The War on Terror is will last exactly as long as there is political capital to be had from it.

Well, while I gave my hardly-enthusiastic, limp outsider's nod to the guy, I can still recognize that it's sort of depressing news all the same. I wouldn't be that happy about it in the end, either. I hope he largely stays in the shadows and doesn't do anything stupid.
aguywhoplaysthief on 7/5/2007 at 05:07
This election has really given me hope that the idea of democratic politics isn't a completely pointless fraud.
Thanks guys!

It's nice to see lots of people get all votey and all, but with as close as dammit to a 50/50 split there's only one president. That's just dumb.
