So, I've been wanting to play Thief for a very long time now, and recently picked up the Gold edition because the original doesn't work with XP. After much rejoicing in being able to actually install the game, and even play through the entire first mission I've found myself unable to play the game the very next day. When I try to load a game or start a new game, it shows my objectives (or lets me purchase items), shows the loading dials, and then drops me back to the desktop with no error message.
I installed the improved meshes mod and darkloader after running the training mission; I was still able to play through the first mission, and I exited and reloaded the game a few times that day with no problems. Today, no such luck.
Anyone here know how to help me out?

Did you exit DARKLOADER by INSTALL only the original game?
Did you set the affinity for the CPU to a single core?
With Darkloader when you quit a FM (if you use them) always INSTALL ONLY one of the orginal games (TDP/GOLD TMA) also if you are using GOLD you MUST OPTIMIZE.
If you do this and it still fails, I suggest a Uninstall and Reinstall. Make sure you clear out all the folder and misc left after the uninstall.
I have all three installed from the DVD set and have no problems. I have XP PRO SP2 and a different vcard and CPU, but if you set the affinity you should have no problems.

I'm not running any FMs, and Darkloader seems to have optimized just fine; the game ran fine yesterday after doing so. I did nothing in between yesterday and today that should have made a difference.
As far as affinity goes, I've been doing that already. If I don't, the game freezes after about three minutes of playing. Well, when I was able to actually load a game, at least.
I'm definitely considering an uninstall/reinstall... I was just hoping there was some other solution before I went that route. Thanks for the reply though. I'll wait a few days and see if I can figure anything else out.

If you do the cleanup and reinstall. DON'T PLAY any game until you have done all the tweaks and install DARKLOADER AFTER you have made the changes.
That might help.
I don't know for sure if the sequence of installing texture patches etc. before Darkloader really makes a difference, but for me installing DARK last has never caused me a problem.
And, if you've not been doing so, always do a FULL install.
