I'm posting this thread with the idea of letting potential players of the digital download of System Shock 2 from GOG know some feed back hardware/software wise for game play.
Background information:
I build high end gaming rigs for family and friends. I have done programing in the past but have not done so for over eight years. Programing takes lots of time which I don't have. Hence, when I buy/load/use a game or computer, I just want it to work.
My current build:
Intel Xeon E3 1280 V2 Ivy Bridge Rev 1, Steeping 9 on an Gigabyte Z77X-UP4-TH Rev 1.0 Bios F9. {in Bios I have turbo turned off along with power saving so CPU runs at stock 3.6 all the time. No, I no longer OC any of my CPU's. Been there, done that}
CPU air cooled with Zalman CNPS 9900 max-B with max temp of 56 c with several instances of Prime 95 torture test running. {Have done a number of water cooled rigs in past. Not any more. Been there, done that}
32 Gigs of Crucial memory running at 1600. { Yes, I have OC memory in the past. Not any more. Been there,done that}
EVGA GTX 680 4 GB on board memory. Driver 310.70{ Yes, I have done SLI in the past on several machines. Not any more. Been there, done that}
Asus PB278Q for my monitor.
Win 7, SP1, 64 bit all updates with E Set AV internet suite, all updates { yes, I have done Webroot, Bitdefender 2012, 2013 and others, always come back to E set. Don't get me started on Bitdefender , please.}
C Drive is Samsung 830 Pro 512 GB. Other three internal HDD are WD RE4 500GB.
I'm a 56 year old gamer in love with System Shock 2. My best, all time favorite game. Period! So, I am very prejudicial when it comes to this game. I am very thankful for the modding community and the work they have done to keep this game alive. I have tried with limited success in the past downloading the various mods/add ons/fixes/etc on various win 7, 32 bit/64 bit machines with limited success. I just want to install the game from scratch and have it work. Spare time for me is at a premium. I don't want to tinker under the hood with software or hardware. I just want to use it and have it work. I wish to game, not trouble shoot.
Great news after eight hours of game play with the GOG digital download. Not a single problem so far. Everything is working great. For those sitting on the fence debating buying/aquiring this, so far for me, it's been great right out of the download folder.
Thank you to all of you whom have made this happen, whether you have been recognized for your efforts or not . I say to you. Thanks!
Adam,
I for one appreciate the info on the GOG "digital" download working properly on a x64 Win7 install.
Appreciate also the DETAILED info on your build naming components by name, etc.
(So many times on the net people will not name components, nor mention stepping or ver numbers of hardware/software, factory id numbers, or batch lot numbers- which is important.)
Most all mass produced goods come from several factories, changes are made during production runs- xyz widget from 2yrs ago may be a robust product, same product with the SAME name being el-crap-ola.... A certain Linksys WRT160N router I have comes to mind, v1.xx of that model being a decent router- router with the SAME naming (v2.xx) made a year or so later being CRAP. Same goes with CPu's, motherboards, video cards- some are good, others crap.
*Such info also helps those doing searches later on, I for one if I have the same video card, or whatever "like" to run across posts that take me to info specific to that hardware /software instead of having to muddy thru THOUSANDS of posts of "generic" info.
Anyhow- appreciate you taking the time to post the details.
BTW: What would be even better is posting how the game runs on a clunker instead of a high-end spec'd rig. I don't keep up with the latest, but that EVGA GTX 680 4 GB on board memory is a pretty strong card...

How much of a clunker do you have in mind? If it is a 1999 clunker then that would actually be very interesting to see. I guess it will not run quite as well and many of the new bells and whistles will either not show up at all or make the game behave strangely.

I don't think a 1999 clunker would run it well.

GOG "digital" download page for the 2013 "Digital" version of SS2 patched to v2.4 states min requirements of:
Minimum system requirements: Windows XP / Vista / 7 / 8, 1.8 GHz Processor, 2 GB RAM, 3D graphics card compatible with DirectX 9.0c, 2GB HDD, Mouse, Keyboard. Patched to version 2.4*******************
Point I was trying to make is OP's system should run anything and it would be nice to know how it runs on systems not so well spec'd.
The video card OP has 2013-03 is
$599 - $956(

Pulled the install files off my SS2 CD and applied the v2.4 patch that it appears is being used on the GOG digital version of SS2:
Below machine is from 2004 or so?
GOG 2013 "Digital" version of SS2 patched to v2.4 Runs great, NO problems.
Win7 Pro x64
ACPI x64-based PC
P4 Intel 3.0ghz
ACPI\GenuineIntel_-_Intel64_Family_15_Model_4
2GB 800mhz ram, w 2GB usb stick in "ReadyBoost" mode.
NVIDIA GeForce 8500 GT (512mb?)
PS: For those having a problem with the word D I G I T A L...:bored:
Original SS2 was distributed on CD. CD being comprised of digital "0"s, and "1"s...
GOG 2013 "Digital" version of SS2 patched to v2.4 is only available in the "digital format" via a "digital" download so the wording used by the OP is technically correct.

You are dumb.
jtr7 on 7/3/2013 at 04:16
Yep. There is no analog download format. The use of the term "Digital" is unnecessary when referring to an online download, even more so since the distinction from a purchase of a physical disc doesn't need to be made these days, and not nearly enough people think of GOG.com as a site for purchasing physical media to add that information.
Not to mention, a heads-up: It always looks suspicious when someone registers just to defend someone like a friend. If Adam had thanked you, it would really look bad for you, heh heh, but welcome, anyway.
Also, the just barely permissible: "two week ago"... :p
We all lose!

You really need to keep your paranoia in check.

On a more serious note, i didn't know that there's such trolling here too. Always thought this was a more mature community. :)
Define "mature".

Amazing how they are making a big deal over the phrase "digital download" the OP used. (Which is technically correct -it is a "digital" download.)

BTW to the those paranoid /troll types out there that have added nothing to this thread that may be useful for those who like me were wondering if System Shock 2 could be made to run in a Win7 x64 OS environment, were wondering how the GOG version "performed". I ran across this post while researching how or if System Shock 2 could be made to run in Win7 x64. I have no connection to Adam, know him, etc. (Wish I did, would love to get some of "Last years" hardware off of him)

I would prefer "digital distribution" as a correct term.
