See, I never saw it as a failed career. The way I've always interpreted things, we have a dude who works in a bookstore who took time out to be a goddamned awesome and way-ahead-of-his-time musician (I mean, the echoes of MC 900' Jesus are felt in all nerdcore, from Beck to Frontalot), got totally disillusioned / fed up with / sucked dry by the job, and said "Welp, that was fun but now it's shitty and I don't have much more to say so I'll go back to the bookstore" :D
