My biggest issue with Thief Gold is that it feels like a filler expansion pack. But then I played TDP for years without buying Thief Gold and also played quite a lot of FMs. That's why when I finally obtained Thief Gold it was kinda meh to me. Thieves Guild was a frustrating maze and the mage tower wasn't exceptional, but I did love the opera house. Still I prefer the original storyline where two talismans were placed in the Lost City and two were in the Hammerite temple.

Here is a short summary of points made in this thread about Thieves' Guild:
* (+) Challenging
* (+) Varied locations
* (+) Compelling story
* (-) Monotonous
* (-) No enough clues on how to progress ("needle within a very large haystack")
* (-) Sticks out in the difficulty curve of the game: Thieves' Guild as the most challenging mission of the game follows the easy Assassins and is then followed by the moderately difficult The Sword.
* (-) Awkward placement in the narrative sequence as it delays the start of the main plot even further to mission 7 of 16
I haven't played the mission in 16 years, but I remember I felt bored and frustrated. I wonder how I would view it today.

Just wondering, did anyone actually complete this mission without googling for help or consulting a guide at least once? I mean, assuming that you had either internet or a guide at the time. If you had access to these things but didn't use them as you found everything yourself, well I have a feeling that you are in a minority. Most would have searched for at least one solution for an obstacle in this maze :)

When I played Thief Gold for 1st time I had no internet connection, so I had no guides. Navigating sewers was annoying, but doable and I had hard time finding bracelet. Every time I replay this mission I get lost in sewers. It also doesn't help that I never remember who's house I need to visit first, so after realizing that I entered wrong house I get really frustrated that I need to go to other house on the other side of map.

galaer i had same experience,with playing like you ,but i think i played the fan mission version first then got thief gold later,i had same mix up on what place to hit first,the bracelet was had as i did not think of table,sewers where not to bad as i knock everything out so once i clear each section i just moved on to next section,also i had years of fan mission experience by this time,so i felt if anything it was an easy mission with a over amount of guards=not hard but annoying to knock them out and hide before next k.o.
if they were to trim down the guards,add some more puzzles elements to get from section to section,it would be a better mission,with a few tweaks

The Thieves' Guild was a mission I never finished or really even got to play properly, seemed confusing and somewhat ugly. There are these things in life where you think to yourself that you can overcome this obstacle, but is it truly worth it? Will I feel better about myself to beat a reduntant video game level? Is it really worth my time and energy? Not at all.
Just use the skip level cheat code and move on, it's really not that important. Even in the context of the game itself, that mission is pure filler really.

I think I'm in the vast minority, but of all the Thief Gold extra missions, I found Song of the Caverns to be the most boring. It all seemed so square and by the numbers, with not many unique areas. Mage Towers was OK, I like the idea of Mages as enemies and some of the elemental stuff is cool, but overall the mission was too big and had too many giant open spaces with nothing in them.
Personally, I love Thieves Guild. The layout is unconventional and unpredictable, and very twisty/confusing/disorienting, and that equates to fun for me. Plus, there's some decent lore with the opposing guild factions fighting each other and then suddenly throwing Garrett in the mix to mess things up. Kind of surprised at all the vitriol over the years towards this mission, but to each their own.
