My first time round, I made an all-rounder char and had lotsa problems with Ylsides. One guy suggested blasting them with 2 fireballs and it worked.
This time round, I play a fighter (minor) - mage (major) and eventually pumped up my casting to 80+. At this level, Ylsides die to a single clean fireball hit and Liches can't survive more than 2-3. Plus, when fighting the last boss; his attract Harm wasn't half as deadly the last time round; though it took a longer time to kill him since my melee was weaker.
Maybe next game I go play a thief-mage, aim to wield the ratmen's dagger, go stealthy-backstab and polish off with spells.

I don't think I could force myself to play through Arx again. The storytelling is just so dry and flat. Aside from Groo, I can't name a single character in the whole game.
The combat system was disappointing as well. All those weapons and spells, and it just comes down to casting the biggest fireball.

Or have you REALLY tried something else? The fireballer may be one way of powergaming through Arx Fatalis, but there are other options. Like the FAQ writer for the comprehensive walkthrough on gamefaqs used Harm spell instead.
I just finished my Thief-Mage game. There wasn't hardly any backstabbing done (that is, the description "BACKSTAB" appears on the screen; I only saw that twice, but maybe I wasn't patient enought), but it was cool sneaking around and scouting, watching for the best moment to attack. Towards the end of the game, one hostile goblin lord actually walked right past me while I was standing in the shadows checking out the Logbook! (At that point, my stealth with equipment buffs was just over 100).
Anyone know where to finding Leather Chest Armour of Great Stealth in the game. I can only find the helmet (sold by Miguel) and the leggings (first level of crypt). I wanna see how a 'black assassin' guardian would look!
I still fireball my way through hard fights like vs Liches, big Spiders, Ylsides and that Giant Worm (couldn't believe he took only 2-3 fireballs with a casting of 90). But I had a blast vs the ratmen, cos my stealth was up enough to sneak up on them and get the first hit in, then dagger-duel them (the two times I had the "BACKSTAB" description were both against Ratmen, BTW); I only fireballed them when I got jumped by a gang of them.
Plus, it's cool to pickpocket people with high stealth :) Like stealing the keys from Felnor and checking out his quarters ...
I died quickly to Akbaa first time; my low health means he killed me quickly with spells despite high magic resistance. Shifted tactics and used the Negate Magic spell, which shut off ALL his magic attacks. My mana pool was almost 200 so I maintained the spell for the entire fight; drinking several mana pots to offset the drain and using potions to heal (I can't cast either with Negate Magic up). So he ended up bashing at me and summoning Demons when I retreated too far away. Took me a while to hack him down but I was in no real danger this time round.
Dang, I forgot to poison my sabre before fighting Akbaa!
On a side note, I just found out for myself that I could enchant RINGS by combining them with an appropriate potion beforehand. So far I managed a Regeneration Ring (Gold Ring + Life Potion) and an Invisibility Ring (Silver Ring + Invisiblity Potion). Hmm wonder if there were other combinations ... I personally don't use these charged staff; prefer keeping 'constant effect' rings on hand (pun unintended).

that's certainly true...
having only ever -really- played thief previous to playing arx... i played through as thief-ily as possible.
i thought it was a decent game for a once-through - even if i hate boss npc stuff with a passion (akbaa was rather laughable though since you can just run up one of those column things, levitate & not get hurt :p)
been quite a while since i played (i'll have to agree with zylon on its replay value - to me, the game's a bit chore-ish feeling, especially after having played through the whole thing, with not so much to do along the way to each little chore) so, sorry, can't remember where much is anymore :)

Yes, I have. I tried to get all clever with combining spells in various ways, and got my ass handed to me every time. The fireball is overwhelmingly the best bang-for-buck spell in the game.

Sadly...I got/am sick and tired to casting fireball every time I had to kill something...
I even got lucky and found the only 'hidden' rune (Friid, if you're curious), but, unless there's some awesome combination, it's all but worthless. You'd think that if they go to the trouble of leaving a rune out of the manual, they'd leave out more than one, and those combinations would give you some cool new spells....

Umm, in case you (or anyone else) is still wondering: the Stealth Chest armor is in a cabinet next to the door of the little shack where you usually find Alia.
