Read this over at geek.com:
Google has added yet another set of tricks to their popular Gmail service. Now instead of simply writing emails or instant messaging through Gmail you can also utilize video and voice chat. Since the video and voice chat is built into Gmail you don’t have to launch a separate program to use it. The service uses a simple plug-in to handle the communication.
Video and voice chat will also be available to Google Apps customers as well for no extra charge. In order to use the new service you simply open a Gmail chat window and click on the “Options” menu on the bottom and choose “Add voice/video chat”. The new functionality is available for Windows and Mac users.
Gmail is truly the web-based email service to use. I love how Google just keeps adding more features to the service to make it even easier to use. Now that Gmail includes instant messaging in addition to video and voice chat you really don’t have to look anywhere else for you personal communication needs.
Sounds pretty kickass to me. Step in a new direction for email.

anything you personal communication needs.

Is it really so great that the entire communications grid goes through one private company? I guess it happened with AT&T back in the day ... but man those were analog cables. And this is ... Google. It doesn't have the best reputation for not data mining every nook and cranny it can get its grubby hands into. Now it will have our
voices and faces, too!

I heard I could get my Mark of the Beast itt. Is this the line? Forehead please, not the hand.

I'm in the final stages of converting. My friend told me that when Google in a few years emerges as the one true power ruling the world, I would in all likelihood have applied for priesthood already.
He's not wrong.

Please change the title of this thread to "Gmail gets ninjas". See settings for optional themes, like ninjas.

I'm waiting for a custom settings editor for themes and labels instead of choosing from a limited list.:)

I was using Gmail a couple hours ago, unsurprisingly it still said that the service was in beta. Honestly, for how many years has Gmail been running, 3+?

I was going to use the one with the awesome view of Jupiter at the top, but eventually switched up for the much more clean and boring "shiny" theme.
I admit, it never occurred to me to go ninja.

I was going to use that Jupiter theme too but was a little disappointed by how actual messages were displayed. That and smaller emails should have had part of Jupiter underneath of them. /nitpick
I liked the Shiny theme too but ninjas won because of the neat usage of my timezone. If you get a chance, flip over to the ninja theme and check out the bottom of your email messages. There's a ninja and a geisha living together in a small house. What they're doing depends on the time of the day. I watched them eat dinner and prepare for bed last night. :erm:
It's cute though.
