Over the past three years, I ran a Creative Writing and Literature club, as well as a Film as Literature club, for the local High School until having to give it up this past year due to illness.
I miss doing it. The kids were a blast, and, at times, seemed so desperate to just have someone listen to them without any sort of judgment.
Plus, it's shameful how little kids really learn in a small school.

I used to volunteer at the Boys and Girls club regularly, and at church, but now I'm too short on free time to do anything. Literally. I volunteered at the Salvation Army when I was younger, and a home that helps homeless by giving them shelter and helping them clean up to find jobs and housing.
Volunteering will make you feel amazing about yourself, and you get to meet so many amazing people. I would suggest it if you're a people person.

I occasionally help out at my old K-12 school with various things like the school play, the summer festival, that sort of thing. I haven't done the play in a few years though- one of the lead stagehands was an absolute dick to everyone and I decided it wasn't worth it to sit through his abuse.

I volunteered for the American Red Cross once. I was in training for the Air Force for almost 3 months in Texas. I found I had a lot of free time, so I offered at the American Red Cross after I donated some blood. They needed a driver for their van that took people to doctor's appointments and things.
The people were mostly grumpy and gruff that I took to doctors/hospitals. Didn't enjoy much of it. I think I did a better service just by donating blood.

I helped out at a homeless food shelter. It was a sad sight, but a lot of them were really friendly, One time a hooker got stabbed in the secure entrance and the place was crawling with CSI, without the fashion accessories and one liners.
Working there didn't make me feel better about myself, I don't think thats what it was about, just seeing so much shit and everyone just walking right on passed, like a homeless guy asking for the time, people pretend he doesn't exist. He wasn't always homeless, maybe he was a pretty decent guy and just lost his way at some point.
fuck it

I grab several 'cadaver bags' from Melissa's work. They are really just like large, thick, black plastic refuse bags that we put dead animals in. They are ~ 5 feet long x ~3 feet wide. I take these down to various shorelines in the area and pick up all of the idiots' trash that they were too lazy and irresponsible to properly deal with themselves. Creeks, rivers, lakes, ponds, etc... their shores are all full of this shit. Being an outdoorsman and angler, this really bothers me and hits a nerve. So far this year (the 'season' started for me 3 weeks ago when the weather changed for the better) I have filled 18 of these suckers!!! By the end of the year, I will have filled over 100. I am the trash warrior.
I also run a bi-annual electronics recycling program .where people drop off old electronics that they would have otherwise thrown in the landfill. I then fill my truck and take it to be properly recycled, and if it is still functioning and nice enough to be re-used then I shift it over to a non-profit that I am in the process of starting up.
I am trying to start up a non-profit where individuals donate various PCs, laptops, game systems, TVs, MP3 players, digital cameras, etc...and I give them to various people and other non-profit organizations in need. Mostly, my main focus is sick and terminal kids. Also working with a battered women's shelter to provide PCs, laptops, fax machines an whatnot to assist in them getting back on their feet and working. So far, so good. I have, as of today, hooked up 16 individuals and 3 organizations with a total of 2pickup truck beds full of goods. I need to continue studying the tax laws and whatnot, but I should be fully functioning within a year.

I volunteer for a old logging museum as that is ran by a railroad historical society. Once you volunteer for one job that nobody wants in the organization then they will try to get you to do a bunch of other things nobody want to do either. I do several jobs for the museum, all volunteer because when you only have a bachelor's degree in history there isn't much to do but volunteer. I am the treasurer, newsletter editor, membership chairman, by-laws asst. chairman, and general person who scans, copies, and transcribes a shit-ton of documents. All this for the 'education' of the people, and a little fun now and again. I even pay a annual membership so I can do all this for free. The real benefit for me is that I get to ride the old train ride for free and having the keys to the museum makes it easier for me to photograph the place whenever I want. If you volunteer for something make sure what you do is what you really want to do or it will suck. I happen to like the old trains and logging equipment, and the drama associated with an all volunteer organization. Good luck....
