I don't have a problem with RBJ's post because while it was pretty obviously tongue in cheek - and even though the method he used to gain attention might have been offensive to some - it was clear that he's quite sincere about the request by the end. And that is the important bit, I think.
My grandma had diabetes, but managed to keep going right until the ripe old age of 86. She was quite something. As are the few other people I know who have diabetes and are still working - working harder, even - persevering, and inspiring people all around them.
I would love to donate, and while I can't really guarantee the possibility, I'll try and chip in something towards the cause. It's as important as they come, and I respect what you're trying to do here. Raise that money, man. Even if it means wearing tight, sweaty lycra across the country.

I had to go back and reread RBJ's original post to see what all the fuss was about. The whole hostage joke didn't even register in my brain, it was so insignificant compared to the rest of it. Diabetes is often overlooked because it can be "managed," but it must be a tiresome, frightening way to live. Donating!

RBJ, I wish your lovely lady all the best. I have Type II, but I control it with diet, exercise & oral meds - no insulin thankfully. I'm too scared to let it get out of control given my family's history - lost body parts, lost vision, neuropathy, and so on - because they didn't control their carb intake. I am happy to contribute what small amount I can - after I go buy that bottle of red hair dye of course! ;)

For the record, I never said it was a necessity. Without it, his thread would have still gotten pinned, and then more would have paid attention. I did, however, say that it may have helped.
But yes, I think this could be nicely dropped now. Some people agree with RBJ's approach, some don't. I'm pretty sure we can all still learn to get along.
