Jian violated the agreement they had and Billy Bob was in no mood to let it slide.
Did he really though?
Agreeing "not to talk about it" and "not to mention it at all" are two different things. One leaves it as fair game for a contextual intro while leaving it out of the interview proper, and the other is the hyperparanoid desire of a star with a vanity project that desperately refuses to let reality inform him that he wouldn't be taken seriously but for his pre-existing fame.
I'm pretty willing to believe that BBT isn't such a master of language that his instructions weren't vague enough that they could easily be misconstrued as allowing the intro by anyone with, you know, half a brain.

Thank you. That's what I've been trying to say for like, 12 pages, except with with smaller words...:(

All comparisons aren’t worthless merely because the chasm in parallels can perpetually be widened. The point was that even if through a concerted value judgment everyone agrees that the violence in Germany, Alabama or Binghamtom is worse, I think Billy Bob’s behavior actually evokes more blood-curdling concern by a peculiar amount of people, and I’m questioning this desensitization. And as for RBJ’s distinction, I don’t think it’s more than an arbitrary conjuration even if its intention to call Billy Bob a “hyperparanoid… star with a vanity project[,who] desperately refuses to let reality inform him that he wouldn't be taken seriously but for his pre-existing fame” is probably sound. Billy Bob was irked by Jian, regardless of our speculations on how righteous he was, and he bore down on this mediocre Canadian interviewer, who has subsequently been treated like a martyr for Canada and good taste.

Well, I've already conceded that i'm not going to win this one, I recognize that I'm essentially playing the contrarian here. I think, after all, we can all agree that Billy Bob was an asshole, regardless of what was agreed upon, and that Billy Bob kept it up even when Jian tried to backpedal and make amends.
What I do take issue with is the view that Billy Bob is a washed up hack of a musician who should have considered himself lucky to be on Jian's show in the first place. I also find it kind of interesting how offended the musicians in this thread are on behalf of the behavior of a guy who chucks their rules out the window by totally not giving a shit.
Also: the idea of Canadians unified in nationalistic anger against Billy Bob Thorton's cosmic cowboy band is about as entertaining as things get at 11:24 PM on a Tuesday.

But see, it wasn't that he didn't give a shit. The problem was that the only thing he seemed to give a shit about was that he be treated like a more important person than he actually is.
I'm not sure why it irks me so much. Part of it must be the frustration that comes from being a fan of other artists who are not as well known, both locally and internationally, while BBT blows off a show that many of those acts would kill for.
I think most people also like to see a measure of humility in their celebrities because there's a certain consciousness that if it weren't for fans, radio hosts, etc., they'd be working at a Wal-mart somewhere. So when a 'star' acts like BBT did, it feels a bit like a personal insult, even though I've personally never bought his music. It's just a much better vibe when someone who really is as big as BBT thinks he is, is humble and grateful to the fans and press for putting them where they are. When I saw this, I'd just come off of a half-hour viewing of Geddy Lee introducing all the Rush videos on VHI Classic and the contrast just really pissed me off for some reason...

In The Ice Harvest ... Cusack plays a boozy, sad-sack, Wichita mob lawyer ...with the help of gruff, belligerent porn merchant W.R. Thornton. Thornton, of course, is best known as a monster-magazine enthusiast and the drummer/vocalist for rock superstars The Boxmasters, but he also apparently has a sideline as a film actor under the name Billy Bob Thornton.
