Gimme a BBT with mashed potatoes and gravy. - by Nicker

He hasn't been playing music for two years. He's been putting out albums with this band for two years. He didn't just become a musician. That was the point that still isn't getting through.
I disagree NH. Just the introduction alone had me bored, and the mention of the acting--the "context" for the listeners--got an immediate reaction from BBT. The host's repeated mild mockery of the three album releases in a year was bizarre to me. He didn't just ask about the unusual frequency of output, he clearly treated it as something wrong or incorrect, and his notion of ambitious is also bizarre. You record, you release, unless you are under corporate contract.
Stop thinking like consumers and remember he's a man, he gets tired, how could anyone not be bored with being asked the same misinforming questions hundreds of times, when he's trying to express a side of himself SEPARATE from acting, and not something he just started doing recently. A musician is still a musician whether he/she ever enters a studio or puts out an album.
So what if he's a tool. How many of you are tools, and yet have a faithful audience anyway? BBT's fighting against the notion that a person cannot honestly be something other than what they are famous for. How is that so hard to comprehend? Think different. An artist got your attention with an unusual expression and provoked you. Being an asshole is besides the point, but an easy safe-place for the unwilling mind. Kill the messenger! :laff:
Originality? How about filling a void in current musical trends? Are you an artist? Do you not understand loving other artists' works, not finding their like in the modern world, and paying tribute to those works you admire by reminding or introducing people to the composers that enriched your own life?

Then why is he so insecure? His behavior is tantamount to beating his chest and yelling, "No, really! I'm a serious musician! Take me seriously or I'm going to get mad!"
Write a fucking song that someone remembers and maybe we will BBT. It worked for Paul McCartney and John Lennon. You would know since you grew up as a music historian.
This is the guy you stumble over in the music store playing Smoke on the Water, watching the other customers out of the corner of his eye. Tool.

No-one's forcing him to do interviews, and it's no secret that interviews are usually constituted of a barrage of cliched, unimaginative questions.
If you don't want to get into being a publicist, stick to the music and don't do interviews. There's not just one end to consumerism.

The host screwed up, disrespected BBT's wishes, and was often condescending, so I'm not surprised BBT played mind games with the host.
You're screwing up with this post. Like he very ably explained several times to a drugged-up and puffed-up Billy Bob, he is a DJ doing a live show that requires context for his listeners. 99% of people who tune in would be like "who the fuck are these guys, I've never heard of them" and then they hear BBT is involved and it's a hook. As if it isn't the only reason they even have a shred of fame at the moment anyway, pumping out "cosmic cowboy music".
He didn't talk about BBT's films or life as an actor beyond a very flattering introduction which lasted a grand total of a minute and a half, which is very obvious context for introducing the band. Also, when he starts deliberately derailing the interview by bullshitting the questions that's when he goes straight into dickhead territory (as if great musicians aren't asked what their influences and favourite artists were growing up) and then he goes into fullblown dickface cockmaster mode when he starts telling him how the DJ should be conducting his own interview.
Then he makes flippant comments regarding not "dragging around drum kits at 6 in the morning" unlike a lot of bands that probably play live on there who do. What about the fact that he sings? Why not sing instead?
He probably doesn't drag around a vocoder at 6 in the morning either.

The 'interviewer' is a talented musician himself. He was in the band moxy fruvous from 1989 to 2002. He's not just a hack interviewer, he knows what it is to be a musician and usually leads his interviews in such a way that the artist can take the lead in telling the audience what they're all about. I listen to the show all the time, and generally the interviews are fantastic.
Ryan Adams was a dick on the show a year or two ago as well. Until this interview came along, it was the most painful I had heard.
Talk of BBT's film and directing went no further than the introduction, which is standard practice. BBT was a dick about it and didn't even give the interview a chance. It was completely unprofessional. If Billy Bob's people didn't make it clear that there should be NO mention of his previous work 'outside' of the questioning, then it was simply a failure to properly communicate. Perhaps Billy Bob could have pulled up his pants and double checked everything himself.

I could assume you were the kind of person that feels entitled to have these questions answered for your own sense of entitlement. But this would not necessarily be true, either.
The interviewer didn't ask him anything about acting, directing, anything related to movies. He asked an easy question, "What were your musical influences growing up?"
"I don't know what you're talking about."
Interviewer: "What kind of music influenced your hillbilly British Invasion style you're now playing?"
BBT: I don't know what you're talking about.
For the record, yes, I am an artist. Not a musical artist. I don't care if someone asks me about my bomb loading days in the Air Force when I'm trying to tell them about something else. BBT is a washed up has-been. His voice is ok. Haven't seen his drumming, but might be good.
Do you think Bill Clinton was pissed off when he was trying to play his Sax on tv and people kept asking him about presidential issues? FFS man, give someone a little context as to hell they're listening to on a radio show where they can't see him.
Radio Listener Angelina: "OH! It's Billy Bob Thornton on the radio with a band. I liked him as an actor, maybe I'll go buy his music."
Gee, that might sell some music to begin with, and if they have talent, it will sell more.

Why are we calling Billy Bob "washed up?" I know he blew off an interview many of us would have killed our mothers to have but last I checked he still acted in movies that were released in theaters.
Also: I see BBT's point in the interview, and even applaud some of his tactics (talking about assembling monster models was ace) but ultimately his behavior accomplished the very opposite of what he was going for.

Are you serious? I could see it if he was on some stupid, low brow show, but Q is a fairly highly regarded show on CBC Radio...much like The Hour on CBC television.
There was no point, he simply behaved like an asshole instead of waiting to see what the questions were...and none of the questions were about his film career.
Sorry, but I worked as an artist, in film, and as a musician. It's one thing to request that an interviewer not ask you any questions beyond the immediate subject, but it's quite another to expect them not to fill their audience in about who is on the show. It's Jian's show, not Billy Bob Thornton's. If Jian wants to inform his audience, that's his job and his right, but he respected the request not to ask questions about his film career...as I've heard Jian do in many, many interviews. He's a pro, and an experienced musician too. Long story short, Billy Bob jumped the gun and flew off over a complimentary introduction.
