Ghost sound problem... - by polytourist97

On the last couple of playthrough's the ghost sounds have cut off before finishing. Everything plays except maybe the last second or so. This isn't really a big problem as I know what is said/happens in the lost sounds, but it's just starting to get on my nerves. Has anyone else encountered this? The sounds aren't properly synced up with the video, so perhaps whatever triggers the sound is triggering it too late? I don't know how or if that could be fixed though. I've done a fresh install with only shtup as a mod, but the problem persists. I appreciate any feedback & suggestions anyone may be able to supply.

Try cranking-up the available sound channels?

No, that doesn't seem to do anything... I also tried turning on hardware acceleration, but that doesn't help either.
I also checked the sound files to see if there was anything wrong with them, but they seem to be fine.
Maybe it's a problem looking into the RES file for the sounds? The extra bit of time to retrieve the sounds is causing them to delay? It shouldn't take that long I admit, but that might be part of the problem.

What can you tell me about your hardware, specificaly what kind of disk drive architecture you have and what kind of driver you have loaded for the disk controller.
Here's my working theory. . . SS2 has a routine for playing sound files that parses them for length, and allocates a sound channel for playing them for X seconds. I'm guessing something about your system configuration is causing a delay in the access to the file, resulting the last bit of play being truncated. Little crazy, maybe. . .
Is there some AV software you can try disabling?

Could be a sound card driver issue.

My hard drives aren't set up in any special configuration... just an ntfs. I doubt it's a sound driver issue, because it has done it with two different sound cards. I may just try reinstalling with official patch only and see how that works, though I'm pretty sure I'll get the same results.

I tried reinstalling with only applying the official patch and also tried disabling the sound acceleration in dxdiag, neither of which worked. Any other ideas? I might try installing it to my other hard drive and see if that changes anything, but right now I'm really just shooting in the dark here.

Ok, so I fixed the problem, though I'm still not sure what causes it. I have a backup of an old ss2 root install folder that I just copied over the fresh install, and viola, the sounds worked fine. The only conclusion I can make is perhaps my CD isn't being copied 100% correctly anymore due to scratches and whatnot. Still doesn't add up, but at least I know of some way to get the sounds working...

Yet another update...It would seem the problem stems from the video codecs. When the ghosts' sounds were playing and triggering properly, the cutscene videos would not play, however, upon doing the fix for the cutscene videos (adding lgvid.ax to the registry) the sounds once again stopped working properly. So, with that new information, any suggestions? I appreciate any feedback.
