Don't most of the GfWL games have "alternative" forms of activation?

Zerker I think the Steam achievements for BS2 (which have been listed but not active for awhile now) include some for Minerva's Den.

I just tried it with no network connection and it signed me in to GfWL in offline mode and allowed me to continue my game.

Creating a local profile
Local profiles don't need internet access.
Multiplayer, achievements, DLC downloading and in-game patching are unavailable.
Local profiles can't be used for games that are multiplayer-only or always-online (e.g. Age of Empires Online).
Create local profile - Games for Windows Live (GFWL)
* While in any game sign out of your existing profile (if you are signed in), then choose Create New Profile.
* Choose Create New Profile again.
* At the Create Gamer Profile screen, scroll down and click the "create a local profile" link.
* Name your profile and click Submit.
* Customize the profile now if you want to, then click Done to save your profile.
*
I had no idea there was a offline local profile option, I just found the guide. Hope it helps. :)
Sega was so kind to issue me a new GFWL key for my PC DVD copy of 'The Club' (no key included), response was very quick. Immediately after activation the game crashes and the incoming GFWL update patch failed, so I'm off to fix the update.
Hey its a GFWL game, what did you expect? :p

Well, since they're not actually getting rid of this thing, only the marketplace, just wondering if anyone has any ideas on what I can do to resolve the following issue.
I have 3 games on GFWL: Dark Souls, Bulletstorm and Dirt 3. While DS now allows for playing without this online "system", the other two don't, and for the past couple of weeks I have been unable to play these games due to not being able to login to GFWL. I've got no idea why it suddenly stopped working but I tried a few things such as reinstalling GFWL, manually forwarding the ports recommended on the help page and disabling the SW firewall (for testing only). All to no avail.
Since this time I have set up an unused TP-Link D-W8960N router (a gift from my boss) which I installed a couple of days ago, and am still unable to log in. Troubleshooting steps tried so far on the new router:
* Test login on webpage: pass
* try logging in to marketplace via application: fail
* enabled UPnP
* Test GFWL: fail
* manually forward ports
* test GFWL: fail
* pull out hair: pass

I bought DS during the Christmas sale. No time to play yet, because I started playing WoW again (after a 2 year gap). Yesterday I installed DS via Steam. Steam insisted on installing gfwl. No problem.
Today I noticed that when logging in to WoW, there are several 10-second pauses. E.g. there is a black screen for 7-8 seconds. Then the game continues. Also when logging out of WoW, the game freezes for ~10 seconds. Done some testing (removed all my WoW addons). Still problem.
Then I noticed all kinds of gfwl in my start menu. And in the control panel I saw that gfwl installed 3 modules (marketplace, etc). I removed everything related to gfwl.
Low and behold, after removing gfwl, my WoW was acting normal again.
Also, I noticed today that something was accessing my 2nd harddisk. I got windows, \Users and my current games on a SSD. I have a HDD with all kinds of stuff I don't access often. (Films, music, photos, backups). The HDD spins down after 5 minutes. And should stay spun-down for the rest of the day. I like my machine quiet. But something was accessing it anyway. I bet it was gfwl. I wonder what it was spying on ....
What is this crap ? Gfwl trying to spy on games of the competition ? I'll have to find a way to play DS without gfwl. If Fallout 3 could do it, maybe DS can do it too. Or maybe From Software will patch it out soon.

What the fuck did I just read?
Gfwl runs when I'm not playing any gfwl-games.
Gfwl accesses folders where there are no games.
Gfwl had a negative impact on non-gfw-games.
So, simple enough for you ?
And it's no tin-foil hat stuff. I observed this through testing.
