I just got myself a brand new iBook and thought it would be sweet to have system shock working on it since I've read somewhere on here that it was possible. This is my first mac so maybe that's why it wont work but I doubt it.
When running it under classic the menu pops up fine and i'm able to start the game, but the it's supposed to enter the game the screen gets all messed up, and the only way I can get it to update the screen is by pressing pause. That'll show the game in all it's splendor but as soon as I hit pausebutton again it's still frozen with the pause-text over the screen.
Do you have any idea? I'll really really appreciate it... I'm going on a vacation soon and would love to be able to shock it a bit. Thanks!!!!

I don't have a Mac in front of me with OS X, nor have I gotten a chance to use it much, so pure supposition here. :p
I'm willing to bet it might be some graphics related Extension. Probably some new-fangled ATI acceleration driver.
Try turning off some unnecessary Extensions (or simply use the "Basic" template) via Extension Manager. With a little trial and error, you can usually find the offending Extension(s) and keep the rest. But I'd start with all the ATI Extensions; in my experience, drawing or coloring errors are fixed by turning those off.
Sorry if this isn't all that helpful, but I'm quite sure the problem is Extension-related, as I've gotten SS1 to work perfectly on a dual-processor G4 under OS X simply by turning this or that off. ;)

I would like to direct your attention to the search option on the bar above these messages. SS1 on Mac has been addressed in the recent past.

First of all SNAFU thanks for the help. I'm not too good on OS X but I did manage to find something called extensions (under OS 9 controlpanel) on the classic menu, but alas it didn't really help. The graphics are still corrupted. I don't know why this is, and if there's anything I need to do.
And BryanN. I have looked and searched (it's not like I'm new here :) ) and haven't been able to find anything except some people talking about having some problems with classic and sshock.

Timeout here...
We're talking about System Shock 1.
Graphics corruption in System Shock 1.
Graphics corruption in System Shock 1 for the Mac.
Can you possibly think of something
more rare? :p

thank you SNAFU. :)
btw. if I could (sometime in the near future) send you a copy of my extension prefs, would you mind going over it?
If you haven't got the time it's okay, no need to bother yourself.

Don't mind at all.

If this endeavor succeeds, please do post here about what you did to make it happen. I've personally come to the conclusion that I cannot run SS1 under Classic on my OS X Powerbook.

Yeah, with the SS1 Mac version, you dope.
And you do realise that Mac's were somewhat graphically superior back then. There is some higher res stuff in SS1 in the Mac version. Hell, the Mac version of Wolfentstein 3D had twice as detailed sprites as the PC version.
