Good to see you appreciated X16 (X18? I can never remember which is which). Might I advise you try playing Call of Cthulhu if you like being scared.

It never even occurred to me that you could shoot the "poltergeists", since they appear to be little more than mobile anomalies. As the rest of the game makes very clear, shooting anomalies doesn't do a damn thing. So by the time you get into any of the labs, the thought of shooting those things is counterintuitive to say the least.

And that's exactly what I like about them. It took me some time to figure out that I am being attacked by some creatures and these barrels and crates are not flying on their own.
Great "disguise"! ;)

It doesn't even make sense though. Why would anomalies be attacking you?
The poltergeists should have been another class of mutants, instead of these things that look like bullets would just harmlessly pass through them.

That and there doesn't appear to be any connect between shit hitting you and what the 'geists are doing. If the anomolies stopped and appeared to do anything while flinging stuff at you, cool. But as it stands they just kinda float around, and having them in the area causes shit to fly at you. Add to the programing that floating visual disturbances are passive traps that you can't do anything about and you've got an environment that is specifically set up so that you do not figure out how to bust them pesky ghosts.

I agree, which is why it took me so long to eventually figure out to shoot the floating fireball in the lab after riddling the five remaining upright alien bodies or whatever they were with bullets, thinking it was some telepyrokinetic power.
I didn't realise I could shoot the anomalies and hence took the flying boxes and buckets with chagrin.
Great level, that one. Brilliantly scary.

I was possibly more creeped out in that place than in any place in any game I've ever played. Part of the idea that I'm not actually waiting for some scripted explosion makes it all the more creepy. When the barrel flew at me out of the darkness the first few tims I about shit myself.

And yet I did it.
Does that mean I'm better at video games

No, it means you're trigger-happy.

I didn't realise that you could shoot the poltergeists or the floating fireball boss until my second run-through. I actually believed that I had blown open the door with my RPG - in fact, I had just killed the thing with splash damage.
