However, I will say I just left a stash of crap in the building near the bandit base (the one where a bloodsucker ambushes you), mostly artifacts but also my good old Enfield. I'll be back for them later after I finish offloading the stuff I picked up in the lab.

Ah, the joys of packing an entire platoon's worth of guns, armor, and ammo into a container the size of a lunchbox.

In all fairness, it was a safe.

Zylon makes a good point; you can only put 60 kgs worth of stuff into your backpack (by default), but there is no limit on how much you store in boxes, on bodies, etc.
For example, I use the stash near the start point of Red Forest to store things I pick up from dead Monolith. I usually have fuckloads of NATO ARs, sniper rifles, ammo, food and other things in there.
By the way, does anyone know of a mod that makes lighting affect how well enemies see me? I think it would be fun if I could sneak around in pitch black shadows and shoot clueless bad guys into the head from behind. And even if they were aware of me, they'd be unable to know my exact location, so the aim is very inaccurate.

Well, technically you can put an unlimited amount of stuff in your backpack, as long as you don't mind not being able to move.
It would have been nice if encumbrance worked on a curve instead of a hard cap. So sure, you can haul 150 pounds of guns back to the bar if you want... just really, really slowly.

It should do anyway but enemies tend to have unusually (for a computer game) good eyesight. Certainly aliVe mod makes it much easier to sneak around, have you tried that?

I'm not really fond of making drastic changes during the middle of a runthrough. Would it even work at all? aliVe does pretty big changes to the AI and how it lives in the Zone.
It'd be lovely to have the visually impaired enemies without affecting other aspects of the game. :p
(would come in handy when inside the NPP and the X1x labs, and of course during nighttime)

As much as I'd like to make use of stealth in this game I'm not about to start a new game over.

Me neither, I just escaped X16, which is not at all my favorite part of the game.

The problem with X16 is I can't help but think "where is the varia suit" whenever I play through it.
