I tried blasting that door open with a few grenades before giving up and consulting a walkthrough.
Funny thing is, one of the grenade blasts caused a Fireball artifact to pop out.

I didn't realise that you could shoot the poltergeists or the floating fireball boss until my second run-through. I actually believed that I had blown open the door with my RPG - in fact, I had just killed the thing with splash damage.
I picked up an RPG at one stage but now I can't remember where I got it, lost the save games - where's it at, again?

There's quite a few in the game. There's two in dark valley, one in the underground lab, by a skeletal corpse in the big room where you find the second dead scientist's voice recording. The second is on a bandit on the top floor of building with the lab entrance (it might not appear until after you've left the lab). There's one on a merc in wild territory, one in the red forest and a ton in pripyat and the NPP.
They're pretty useless though, since they weigh a ton and ammo is very rare, as is a time when you might actually want to use one.

when i realized that things get hurdled at me in that lab I made it my personal mission to destroy every box and barrel in each new room i entered.....less ammo for those pesky invisibles. only after a few deaths I started shooting the fireballs :)
still didn't beat my first bloodsucker encounter for sheer awesomeness and freak-out factor. when I entered x18 i was already prepared for .... well, everything I could imagine..
....what you want is here STALKER....

I have a question - how the hell do I easily discern the benefits of differing armour suits? Stalker vs Mercenary for example? Reading the descriptions does fuck all, I'm afraid.

Price.

I heard they have different properties like more inventory space etc??

Most suits differ only in the protection you get from them and whether they have nightvision or not. Two suits in the game increase your carrying weight limit and they're clearly marked as such.

Some of them - special tourist suit and exoskeleton have weight limit of 70-80kgs, but you can't run in exo at all. Also suits have different nightvision systems, though some of them don't have it at all obviously. You need to check suit's characteristics to properly choose the best one for your stage of the game if you want your armor be effective. The most expensive one often isn't the best choice.

To check a suit you really have to find a quiet spot, take off your artifacts, and put it on to compare the specs (bearing in mind that whatever you have on in the first place is probably damaged and might actually be quite good when it's new)
Cost is often a terrible indicator. Sidorovich charges like a wounded bull for Stalker suits and things, but despite looking cool they aren't that great once you get past the bar (and you probably couldn't afford one up until then anyway). The SEVA suit is probably the best all around suit in the game but is the mid priced option the scientists give you. The Duty version of same is practically identical (in fact I think it is identical) but costs twice as much, so you'd better be a really big fan of those red highlights.
That heavy duty black military suit and the exos are just so damn bulletproof it's hard to resist, even with the (very) high price tag. But you can find or be given most of the above to try out at some stage.
