Getting positional sound in a home theater surround setup

So I want to show off System Shock 2 to my wife, who's a fan of sci fi horror. The best way to do that would be with her watching while I play on the TV.

The problem is that I can't get this to work properly with EAX on my surround setup. The sound card on my build is a XONAR D2X, which is connected through SPDIF to a receiver that supports Dolby and DTS. The receiver is in turn connected to a 5.1 speaker setup.

If I use the SPDIF pass-through to get the sound to the receiver, all I seem get is plain old stereo sound. If I don't, the sound card simply sends virtual 5.1 info to the receiver. Am I out of luck?

From what I have read, if the game supports Dolby Digital then you can output that instead of EAX. If you have a higher end card such a titanium I think it can encode EAX to DDL via SPDIF.
