Well, I got over the technical problems. But I'm now doing one a quest where I have to get something off someone without murdering him.

[SPOILER]from house Redoran, I have to get a Watcher's Helm off some guy in the Eight Plates in Balmora[/SPOILER]
Well, being a simple Fighter, I can't pickpocket him (whether even a thief class could lift a helmet off him without him noticing, I don't know), I can't taunt him into attacking - occasionally I succeed once, but it isn't enough, and then subsequent attempts just get 'You are pathetic', and I can't intimidate him. You'd think that waving a huge magical sword in his face would do the trick regardless of Speechcraft skill, but, meh.
So far the only way I've got him to hand over the helmet is to bribe him with two lots of 1000 gold. Now, it seems a little bit ridiculous to have to pay the guy 1/5th of my fortune just so he hands over a stupid bit of metal worth a twentieth of that. I tried going over to Caius' and training Speechcraft up to 20 (from 11), but it didn't do any good. Is there any other way, or is this just something of a crack in the game mechanics? I have a personality of 60, by the way.
One other thing: how can I set keyboard shortcuts for weapons and spells? I've read through the manual and the readme, and been unable to find anything, yet for some reason I'm sure you can.

my nord has 100 personality and 80 speechcraft..i still fail in taunting people occasionally like 1 every 10 guys i try wont attack. you can try frenzy humanoid spells on him...those work..cast it then taunt..orrr just pay him off then go find something worth alot to sell and get your money back.;)

Well, all the House cares about is that you get the helm honorably; I haven't tried it (so save 1st) but you may be able to come back (after you bribe him until you get the helm & return it), and do the "provocation thru failing a pickpocket, let him get the 1st hit, kill, and pay your pickpocketing fine" routine. Once the Helm's in their hot little hands, I suspect they could care less about this guy ;)

Thanks for the advice, but don't you need to be in sneak mode to attempt a pickpocket? How am I going to sneak in a brightly lit room full of people with no sneak skill?

What forsythe is saying is..[SPOILER]go get the helm by bribing the guy, take it back to whoever wants it...go back to the guy you got the helm from, TRY to pick pocket him(fail of course) and he will attack you then kill him and get your money off him[/SPOILER] :ebil:
