After more "I-net drug" digging for info (yes I'm actually addicted to the internet), it seems that is just plain bullshit to sell more newspapers.
Is it?

Well not completely. The hallucinatory effects induced by sensory deprivation are well known since early human history. In short, when deprived of patterned input the brain after a while starts creating it's own patterns, similar to dreaming. The article is of course exaggerating the dangerousness of this hilariously. A similar effect can be achieved by staring at an undifferentiated and uniform field of colour.

I remember something like that from an anthropology lecture ages ago. Aren't fractal-type patterns the optic nerves equivalent to TV static or something?

Only if you consider your brain a TV set.

OH SORRY

Pardon me, I was a bit in a hurry this morning as we were going on day trip to castle Drachenfels with Herr_Garret.
Anyway, the images aren't created by the optical nerves but by the brain which actively looks for patterns, so the TV analogy doesn't go too far. It's not necessarily fractal patterns, could be faces or anything really. The best comparison really is dreaming. While sleeping the brain is similarly deprived of sensory information.

No it isn't.

I saw Youtube selling this stuff to children outside of the elementary school.
Edit - To me it's like staring directly at the sun for a few minutes, then looking away and thinking that the disorientation that comes afterwards is actually me being high, when it's actually my brain thinking 'WTF happened there'

Heh, I was curious so I started checking out some vids of folks doing nitrous, funny as hell but prob all placebo. I've always enjoyed some of the 'hypnotic' sound tracks out there that don't really hypnotize but are super relaxing.
